SPORTING NOTES.

(From the Press.)

Since my last notes appeared, Mr Walters' trio have arrived safe and sound, and are now located at R. Richardson's old quarters, near the racecourse. The three, Kingfisher, a six-year-old ; Isaac Walton, a four-year-old; and the Fanny Fisher colt, a three-year-old, are all own brothers, being by Dainty Ariel out of Fanny Fisher ; Fanny Fisher is by Fisherman out of Coquette—Coquette by Lanncelot. The two first-named are useful looking animals, but Kingfisher has, I believe, only once performed with credit. Isaac Walton is reputedly fast, but he has been in the habit of clearing off the course. Of the three I much prefer the Derby candidate, who shows far more quality than either of his elder brothers, and who looks all over like going. Roth he and Isaac Walton are well forward in their preparation, and both have been freely supported by their Auckland friends for the Derby and C.J.C. respectively. The three are under the charge of French. The work on the course has been very steady, and so far as one can judge, none of the candidates have cracked up as yet. Danebury, Dead Heat, Ngaro, Cloth of Gold, and Guy Fawkes seem to show the most improvement in their work. Fallacy goes well, but is a mare of very nervous temperament. She has been ridden once'ortwiceincolors, and the first time got away with the boy. On Monday the majority worked for the first time before breakfast, and visitors to the course must now be there by five o'clock. That morning a considerable amount of fast work was done. On Tuesday Mr Walters' three were the first to show up, and Isaac Walton and the Fanny Fisher colt stripped, went a strong galop for a mile and a half on the plough. The colt has a beautiful style of going, and though it must be confessed the weights were in his favor, yet he had a long way the best of the spin. If this colt trains on, I shall certainly expect him to run into a place for the Derby. Kingfisher, in light clothing, went a steady gallop twice round the plough. Fallacy, after a little performance on her own account, did some serviceable work with Tommy Dodd. Lady Lea, with the sweaters on, went three times round the plough, accompanied the second time round by Danebury and Tadmor, the latter stripped. They finished home at a strong pace, and were picked up by Bob Ray on the Opera filly at the last turn. All went well, and the Champagne filly seemed to move in capital style. Mr Willmer's colt went a steady canter twice round the plough, and then Songster and Maroro went a three mile sweat. Amohia went twice round the plough, stripped, at a slow pace. Never having seen this mare extended, I cannot say what she may be like when going at top, but she certainly gave o ne anything but the impression of being a flyer. Guy Fawkes went a sweat three times round the plough, being accompanied part of the way by little Tara, who does not seem to improve much. Lady Lea picked the old horse up the last time round, finishing at a strong pace. Korari went a serviceable gallop twice round the plough, going freely and well. If the little horse stands his preparation I cannot but think he will win the Handicap in spite of his impost. Ariel and Dead Heat went a clinking gallop of about three miles, the Derby colt going wonderfully well. Ngaro went a very serviceable gallop for about the same distance. Tasso, Cloth of Gold, and the Ethelred filly, were the only three representatives of the Bush Inn stable out. They travelled at a slow canter to the mile post, and then came on at a strong pace, Cloth of Gold going remarkably well. Templeton and Pungawerewere went a striding gallop once round the plough, finishing at a good pace. The rest of the Yaldhurst team only walked. The Christchurch contingent seemed to have had a good time of it at Geraldine, as Tadmor, Fishhook, Moose, and Eclipse, were all more or less successful. The sport appears to [have been very fair, and I understand that :the course, with very little trouble, could be made one of the best in the province. Nectar, as I predicted, did not win the Waitaki cup. I daresay this useful little mare will manage to pay her expenses before our meeting is out. I remind owners that nominations for the Auckland Racing Club Handicap and for the Auckland Cup must be sent to the secretary, A,R.C, before the 27th October. Idalia has thrown a fine colt foal to Traducer. Idalia, it is needless to observe, is out of Dulcibella, and the following paragraph from an English paper, in reference to a recent sale there, must be very satisfactory to Mr Griffith. The paper in question states: —"A very much better bargain, in my opinion, was the colt by King o' Scots, from Dulcibella, fully described by me in a former paper as one of the best in the team, and ■which Joseph Dawson took well within his value for Mr Mitchell Innes at 1000 guineas. This youngster was foaled on January 2nd, and he had, therefore, a very narrow escape of being a year 'behind the fair.' With great bone, substance, length, depth of body, and a symmetrical frame on the best of limbs, I see no reason why the colt should not develope into a Derby winner." The following are the latest transactions in the betting market : Derby.
