Kerosene, 2s Gd; brandy,case, 31s; quarters, 7s 9d ; Adelaide flour, £l2 to £l3 ; wheat, 5s Gd ; New Zealand, 5s Id ; oats, Is 4d to Is sd. and still overstocked ; candles, lOd to IOJd. The Government intend to send extra police to attend the throwing open of the Youko reserves to free selectors. Arrived—Hero, Melbourne, October 6. An assault case at the Melbourne Club between two gallant captains has caused some sensation. To-day another body and more wreckage have been found on the Five Mile Beach. A probate has been applied for in the estate of Mr G. B. Gordon, who jumped overboard from the Alhambra. Administration is postponed for two months, as Mr Gordon might possibly have been picked up. The Southern Cross broke her shaft and lost her propeller in a south-east gale off Cape Schank, and put back to Hobart Town, She was in great danger. A barque passed her, taking no notice of distress signals. INTERPROYINCIAL. Auckland, October 6. Canterbury bacon at auction to-day fetched 9d to lOd ; Canterbury potatoes, 5s 6d ; flour, £l3 10s ; bran, £6 ; pollard, £6 ; oatmeal, £l3 10s ; barley, 2s 6d ; oats, 2s 7d ; bacon and hams, lOd ; cheese, 9£d ; butter, Is ; maize, 4s 6d. Fat cattle, 30s to 35s 6d per 1001 b; fat sheep, in wool, 3d to 3£d ; shorn, 2-J-d; lambs, 6s to 15s. Buyers— Bank of New Zealand, £lB 12s Gd ; South British, 51s Gd ; New Zealand Insurance, 78s Gd ; sellers, 80s, Wellington, October 6.
Produce prices are as follows—Flour, full stock, at £l3 10s to £l4 ; bran, Is Id to Is 2d ; pollard, 7s to 8s ; wheat, middling, no sale ; chicken, 3s 9d ; oats, heavy in stock, at 2s 5d to 2s 9d ; hams. 9d to lOd ; bacon, 8d to 9d ; potatoes, £4 10s ; maize, 4s to 4s 3d ; cheese, 8d to 9d.
Dunedin, October 6.
Wheat continues scarce and firm, from 5s to 6s, according to sample ; oats are freely saleable at 2s to 2s 2d, for inferior to ordinary, and up to 2s 3d for good heavy feed. Milling and seed samples may be quoted at 2s 4d. Barley is in very limited demand, at 4s to 4s 6d, for good to prime malting ; inferior almost unsaleable. Quotations nominal.
The Provincial Executive are awaiting the reply from the Government to their last telegram, to determine on the next step. Sales —Colonial Bank, £1 Is 6d ; National Insurance. £1 5s fid ; Standard, 12s fid. Buyers—Colonial Bank, £1 11s ; National Insurance, £1 5s ; Standard, 12s. Port Chalmers, Oct 7.
Arrived—Barque Amati, 110 days but; she brings 9 passengers, 114 tons cargo for Dunedin, 518 for Bluff. She experienced terrific weather off the Cape. The brigantine Julia, from Boston, 129 days out, and with 153 tons cargo for Dunedin. (From a correspondent of the Press,) Dunedin, October 6. At Fullerton’s, within a mile or two of Hyde, one or two companies have been prospecting for deep leads, and having found good encouragement, commenced tunnelling. One party has just completed a tunnel of 1600 feet in length, and obtained washdirt which they estimate they can get out in such quantities as to pay £fi per week. Encouraged by this success, other parties are busy prospecting.
