AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
The following items are taken from the Melbourne letter of the Daily Times : Gately, the public executioner, has been having rather a rough time of it lately. Only recently he got married to a young girl, an orphan, and had some difficulty in obtaining the consent of a Guardian of Minora. Since his union, he has been molested by a large crowd of boys and young men, who pelt him whenever he shows himself outside his miserable habitation. A counter charge was brought against Dr Fisher, but it broke down, and the jury found that it was unsnstained. In Winter v Winter, also a husband against a wife, the case was very clear, the respondent’s own letter and statements being quite sufficient testimony against her. The respondent and Robert Winter, the co-respondent, peoceeded to Wellington, where it is believed they are now residing. We are getting somewhat overrun with amusements. Newminster is in grand form, and the Derby is regarded as a moral for him ; he is being very carefully watched day and night to keep off intruders. Irish Stew is perhaps the best favorite for the Cup. The full Court yesterday reversed a decision of the Primary Judge in Equity, by which probate duty in the will of the late Mr John Bell will be charged at £30,000, instead of £15,000, as decided by the Judge. The additional £15,000 will make some difference to the Treasurer in his Budget balance, if the decision is not once’again' reversed by the Privy Council; ' The Chinese gambling bouses are now fast disappearing ;' the heavy 'fines inflicted by the Court have had the effect of shutting up the banks.
