It is understood that the Government have received a communication from the superintendent of telegraphs now in England, that from information obtained it is improbable that the American Government will subsidise a cable between America and Australia. Another body, that of an old man, has been found in the schooner Atlantic capsized in the recent gale. In Queensland the body of a line repairer was found in the bush in the noitheru district. It is supposed that he had wandered away from the track, and perished of thirst. He had walked round in a circle within one hundred yards of the track leading to a waterhole. INTERPROVINCXAL. ... The efforts to haul off the Matau by the Luna, this morning, were unsuccessful. She was only moved 10ft. The Matau is still high and dry at low water. Port Chalmers, October 4.
Arrived —The New Zealand Go's ship Mataura, from London. . She brings fortytwo passengers and 1500 tons cargo, She left London on the 27th of June. -
