BOROUGH COUNCIL.

LYTTELTON. Monday, October 2. Present—Hia Worship the Mayor and all the Councillors. The clerk stated he had received £637 10s during the past fortnight. Correspondence was read from the Secretary for Public Works, notifying that a voucher for £625, balance of the grant to the Borough for period ending 30th [September, had been passed for payment. From the town clerk, stating that Mis Baker had left Calo's house, and that her rent was in arrear. The clerk was instructed to collect the rent. Or Cunningham moved, and Or Allwright seconded, "That the estates committee be authorised to sell Calo's house by auction, the reserve to be £100" The report of the foreman of works, giving an account of the progress of the various works in the town duriDg the past fortnight was read. A petition from the Lyttelton carriers was read, drawing the attention of the Council to the advisableness of forming that portion of Exeter street between Dublin and Canterbury streets. The works committee were requested to report on the matter next meeting. Accounts amounting to £164 lis 9d were passed for payment. A tender of D. Dimond and Son for carting for the Council for the ensuing twelve months was accepted. The Mayor said Mr Grubb had requested him to ask the Council to culvert more of the gully in his property. Much discussion followed, but the matter was deferred for the present. A copy of the amendments in the Municipal Corporations Act was reported as having been received from Mr H. P. Murray-Aynsley, and the Mayor stated that he had gone over it with the borough solicitor, and that it was at present in that gentleman's hands for further consideration. Cr Hawkins said the Council ought to make better approaches to the footpaths, and moved—" The works committee be empowered to carry out the work." Seconded by Cr H. McDonald, and carried. The clerk was instructed to briug up a monthly ieport of outstanding rents. Cr I Cunningham moved—" That the borough solicitor be instructed to sue for all outstanding rates for 1876." Seconded by Cr Hawkins, and carried. Cr Willcox moved—- " That a committee, consisting of Crs P. Graham, H. Allwright, and the mover, be formed to inquire into outstanding rates of absent owners, and present a report to the borough solicitor for his opinion." Carried. Cr Holmes requested permission to drive u tunnel through the bank in Dublin street to the back of his premises there. The matter was left in the hands of the works committee to report on. Cr Cunningham moved—" The member for Lyttelton be telegraphed to for a copy of the Harbor Bill." It was resolved—- " That £SOO be placed at interest at 7 per cent, fourteen days' call, with the Loan and Investment Company of New Zealand," The Council then adjourned.
