CHRISTOHURCH. Tuesday, October 3. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, E.M.) Escaping from Legal Custody.—Timothy O'Connor was charged with escaping from the custody of the bailiff of the Resident Magistrate's Court. The accused pleaded ignorance of committing any offence. He had paid Dr Patrick, who had taken out the warrant, £1 a few days ago, and did not know that any person but a policeman had the right to arrest him. His wife was ill, and thinking Mr Mc Knight had no right to take him, he had been anxious to see her, and ran away. [The wife of accused, who was in Court, here fainted, and was carried out.] Mr McKnight observed to his Worship that he did not desire to press the charge. His Worship told accused that as his wife was not well, and seemed likely not to be in good health for some time, he would dismiss the charge, but should he ever again be unfortunately placed in position of being arrested by a bailiff, he must remember that a penalty of three months' imprisonment attached to escaping from his custody. Discharged. Drunk and Disorderly.—James Brown, charged with drunkenness, was fined 10s and cab-hire. An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was fined ss. Drunk and Resisting thf Police.— Henry Lewis, arrested for being drunk, using obscene language, and resisting the police, was fined 20s. Transfer of License.—A temporary transfer of the license of the Britannia Hotel, from E. Plank to Charles Green, was granted. LYTTELTON. Tuesday, October 3. (Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M.) Drunkenness.—Kichard Lambert, arrested by Constable Bullen for this offence, was dismissed with a caution. Desertion.—James Roberts was charged with deserting from the brig Fawn. Capt. Brownell proved the offence was committed on Sunday last. Accused was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. Absent without Leave. Richard Lambert, charged with this offence by Capt. Rundle, of the barque Bspeigle, was sentenced to eight days' imprisonment.
