INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland, September 29. The half-yearly report of the South British Insurance Company to be presented to the shareholders on October 9th shows the balance to credit of profit and loss account at the end of last half-year to be £22,620, of which £12,5(30, or 6s 8d per share, will be added to the capital. This will make the paid up capital £75,000, or £2 per share. Wanganui, September 29. A fire occurred at three o’clock this morniug in James F. Anderson’s dweUinghouse,
completelj gutting it. The house was insured for £2OO in the Victoria office. The loss is much heavier. Blenheim, September 30. A fire Iroke out at 5 o’clock this morning, in an empty house between Messrs Bedes and Ranger’s, in Market street. The adjoining properties were saved by the fire brigade. The property was owned by Mr Hull, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, and was Insured for £250. The origin of the fire is unknown. Dunedin, September 29. At a public meeting, held as Merton yesterday, a series of resolutions was carried condemnatory of the conduct of the member foi the district, Hon Geo McLean, during the session, in breaking the promises he made while addressing his constituents. Several examples being adduced. It was resolve!—“That he had lost their confidence in breaking these promises, and acting with and aiding a Ministry whose aim is to rob Otago of her land fund, railway revenues, and the locking up and handing over to the pastoral interest the land—the commonwealth of the masses.” “ That this meeting further resolves that Mr McLean do resign his seat in the House, as he is only misrepresenting us.” “ That this meeting thanks Mr Macandrew and the Opposition for the manly stand they have taken against the unscrupulous designs of a tyrannical Ministry, and will afford them any support in carrying out any measures they may think necessary.” A complimentary testimonial has been drawn up for presentation to Sir Julius Vogel by the residents at Port Chalmers, should he come this way. One expression is as follows :—“ We regard the dismay at and opposition to your departure, evinced by your opponents, as the greatest compliment that can be paid you, and entirely endorse the remarks of the Hon the Minister of Justice, as recorded in Hansard." The fire brigade demonstration programme is issued. The prizes are more liberal and more numerous than those given at Ballarat, Besides the challenge cup of twenty guineas to be contested by the Dunedin and Wellington brigades there will be three prizes for hose practice open to all fire brigades, the first contest for a cup, value 40 guineas, with eight silver medals £2 2s each ; for engine practice and ladder and hose practice, trophies amounting in value to £3O; The aggregate value of the prizes is nearly £l5O. At the close of the demonstration a meeting of the representatives of the brigades of the colony is to be held, for the purpose of arranging for similar demonstrations in 1877. To render the affair still more attractive, athletic sports will be combined, and a programme of foot races is in completion. As the demonstration comes off on the 26th of December, pedestrians in training for the events of the Ist of January, of the Caledonian Society, will be enabled to compete for both. The Mayors of each town have been invited to attend. Wanganui has intimated a desire to compete if the arrangements suit. The invitations and programmes will be posted on Monday. (From a correspondent of the Press .) Timaru, September 29. At the meeting of the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works to-day, the tenders for leasing the Government Landing Service were considered. There were ten tenders submitted, and that of Messrs Royse, Stead and Co, at £750 per annum, was accepted. The child of John Evening, who was missed on Wednesday morning, was drowned, his body having been found in the Orari,
