COMMERCIAL.
We have little alteration to note in prices in the era in market beyond the somewhat increased value of wheat caused by low stocks. For prime milling aamples the demand is more especially good, and havers are offering 4s 9d; at 4s 6d some small sales of ordinary quality have been made. Oats continue very dull at Is 9d— in fact, traders show no inclination to purchase now at any figure, stocks being so very heavy, and outside markets present no appearance of improvement. Barley is quite neglected, and stocks in dealers’ hands are large. Millers Quotations for flour are very firm at £l2 f.o.b. in sacks- for large parcels £l3 is asked. Potatoes are now little enquired for, and buyers will only purchase to supply orders. For immediate shipment a few lots haye changed hands at 355. Dairy produce is without alteration—butter at lOd, cheese ?d Hams and bacon are at present dull, but nrices remain firm at 9d bare, and 9jd cloth. Business In the Import market during the past week has been dull. We have nothing much beyond a few forced sales in leading lines to record. The market hns been very bare of sugars, but the arrival to-day of the Espiegle from Mauritius with 300 tons, will keep the market well supplied for some time to come. We understand this venture will be sold by auction in a few days. Trade sales have been recorded during the week in Mauritius white and Colonial Company s at £33 to £35 per tan ib. There has been a great deal of forcing in teas but the trade have bought but sparingly, owing to the dullness prevailing. Several small parcels have been quitted at Is sdto 2s 2d d.p. Spirits— The demand is not very great-Hennessy s can be bought for 7s 6d. at which figure a little has been done. Clouzeau’s has been placed in large parcels at 6s 3d ; other good brands move off m Small lots at current rates. Dunville’s case whiskey Seen sold to arrive at 17s l.b.j Hennessy’s case tomdy, low in stock, sales have been effected at 325. Bottled ales and stouts are quitted slowly; bulk ales fcave been neglected. Rosin has met with enquiry, s large line has been placed at £lO per ton. We hear of several sale# pending. Caustic soda has been enauired for, but stocks are very low, and high are asked. In tobaccos we have not much to reoort. a few lines in aromatics have been cleared «er.+full rates- twists are placed in usual trade L fair rates. Small sales haye been made In Gosnel Oakgaivanised iron at £3l per ton. We have no change to record in cement; 17s 6d is the fuU nrice obtained delivered here for large parcels. Wooloacks arc ottered at 3s 4d; the business done &as been small, owing to its being so early in the barque Espiegle arrived at Lyttelton yesterday with first cargo of new sugars. Letters byher adrise'that the fine barque Pennine was to sail on the 19tb September for Lyttelton direct with a full cargo, and may now be looked tor houriy. fhe bn. Bio has also been taken up to carry 255 tons to Lyttelton.
