CLEARED. ■ ■ Sept 28—Hawea, s.s, 462 tons, Wheeler, for Northern Ports. ARRIVAL OF THE MEROPE. (F This favourite vessel arrived to-day, and anchored, about 10 a.m., off Rhodes’ Bay. Captain Sutherland and all on board arewell. ' The passage has {occupied 91 days, and the ahip has met with exceptionally heavy weather, THE STEAMER WAITAKI. Mr J. Mills, manager of theOamaru and Dunedin Steam Company, was advised yesterday by cablegram of the arrival of the new steamer Waitaki at Hobart Town on Sunday. She called there to take ' In ballast, Is to leave for Port Chalmers to-day, and nance may be expected about Sunday next. The Waitaki left Glasgow on July 7th, was at Malta on the 20th, and so far had averaged nine knots an hour, which was a very satisfactory performance indeed upon the consumption of fuel she •was limited to. Alter leaving Malta nothing was 1 heard of the steamer until her arrival at Hobart Town was announced. She was to have called at Port Said, Galle, and King George’s Sound to coal, bht she must have given the latter port the go-bye, or tidings of her arrival there would have Seen telegraphed. ~ . _ :The waitaki was built by Messrs Wingate and Co, of the Clyde, and it was fortunate for her owners that they obtained delivery ot her before . the building firm became involved in monetary difficulties. . ..... The Union Company was less fortunate with its new steamers Wanaka and Koputai, which, not being completed when misfortunes overtook the ’ Messrs Wingate, their builders also, are now all behind. However, advices received by the Union Company by the last ’Frisco mail said the steamers were again in hand and rapidly approaching completion. It was understood here that the tug Koputai was to have sailed on August 2nd, but no doubt she is well on her way by this time. As soon as it is practicable to make her ready after her arrival here, the Waitangi will take up the running between Dunedin and Oamaru.— •• Otago Times,” Sept. 26th,
