INTERPROVINCIAL.
Auckland, September 27. The Hero has arrived from Sydney. She left on the 20th. The news is mostly anticipated by the Ringarooma. Wellington, September 26. The following is an extract from a letter received from the Sub-collector of Customs at Waitangi, Chatham Islands:-—" Some portions of a large vessel were picked up in June last on the northern coast of the island near Mr Bngest’s homestead, between Tupangi and Mongonui, consisting of a figure head, some fittings apparently having been used for sheep or cattle, and soma very fresh looking Maori scantling of various dimensions; one piece was about 9x14 inches, and 16 feet in length. The figure head consists 1 of a globe on the underneath portion, the upper part being ornamented with a wreath of carved flowers painted blue and yellow. The paint appeared pretty fresh, but the upper portion of the figure head was much decayed. There were very few barnacles on the timber or wreck, and no name was visible on either.” Westport, September 27. In the operations on the Matau steamer yesterday, the propeller was broken. She is so far in the water as to float fore-and-aft at high tide, but the weight of the engines amidships prevents her floating there. Dunedin, September 27. The Fire Brigade intend making their demonstration on Boxing Day a grand affair. A programme has been drawn up. Messrs Macandrew and Stout’s return was ■without any demonstration.
