WEST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the above committee was held on Wednesday evening at 7.30. Present—Messrs Booth, Bickerton, Dunford, Bell, Nairn, Bowie, and Gavin. In the absence of the chairman through indisposition Mr Booth presided. The minutes of last ordinary meeting and a special meeting were read and confirmed. The visiting committee reported that the drainage of the grounds was proceeding satisfactorily; that the roof of the school building had been repaired, and the leak?>g. stopped ; and that the shingling of the footpath had been completed. Mr Booth called the attention of the committee to the slow progress being made with the new iurant school building, and it was decided that the attention of the architect should be called to the matter, and that he should be requested to have the work pushed on more vigorously. A letter was read from Mr Tancred, stating that he was unable to attend, being unwell, and suggesting that the committee should take into consideration the application of Mons. Bourgeois for employment as French master. After some discussion the visiting committee were directed to make further enquiries on the subject, and report at nest meeting. A letter was read from Mr C. J. fioggan, resigning his appointment as third master, as he was relinquishing the occupation of school teacher. The resignation was accepted, and the secretary was instructed to advertise for a third master, the applications to be considered at a special meeting on the 4th October next. Letters were read from the Minister for Education, sanctioning the purchase of a site for head master's house, to be vested in the Superintendent, and requesting that the plan and deeds should be forwarded to the Provincial Solicitor ; also in reply to the committee's enquiry as to what course the Gsvemment would advise them to adopt with respect to the payment of teachers' salaries after the 30th September next, stating that the Government was unable to advise the committee on the subject, as it had received no official intimation from the Colonial Government referring to the future arrangement of the department. A letter was read from the chairman of the Bast Christchurch School Committee, suggesting that if convenient the holidays given in the West Chriatchurch district should be the same as those arranged for the Bast Christchurch schools and Normal School, and the secretary was directed to reply that the committee would endeavor to arrange for the same holidays. After transacting some other business and passing sundry accounts, the committee adjourned to Wednesday, the 4th October.
