MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, September 23. [Before Gi. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.J Committing a Breach of the Peace.— Charles Henry West was charged with striking a man in view of a constable. Defendant stated that the man had used an insulting expression to him, and had afterwards attempted to strike him. He complained to the Bench of the rough treatment he had received at the hands of the arresting constable. In reply to his Worship, the constable said that defendant had resisted him, and he was compelled to be somewhat rough with him. Fined 20s.
Drunk and Disorderly.— Ellen Boyle, who had only been released from prison the previous day, and had been arrested in the evening for being drunk and using obscene language, was discharged with a caution. An inebriate, charged for the first time with drunkenness, and who had been admitted to bail, did not appear when called. His Worship ordered a notice to be served on him, to shows cause why his recognizances should not be estreated.
