* (Per Press Agcncg.') LATEST EEOM AUSTRALIA. ■ ♦ [By Submarine Cable.] Sydney, September 22. News from Roturnah reports the foundering of the brig E. R. Bateson. The crew were saved. The schooner Atlantic has been found bottom up off Newcastle. INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland. September 21. The Seabird, which left Lyttelton for the Chatham Islands to search for the Auckland schooner Agnes, found that the vessel was wrecked at the Chathams, ut the crew and passengers were all saved. They came back in the Seabird. Wanganui, September 21. The schooner Arthur Wakefield arrived from Nelson. She left there at the end of last week, got among the breakers at Wanganui, about ten miles below Wanganui river, on Monday night. On the Tuesday morning Captain John Watts and the cook, a foreigner, were washed overboard and drowned. The body of Captain Watts was found this afternoon on the sea beach seven miles below Wanganui Heads much disfigured, one leg eaten considerably by fish. The body was nearly covered by sand. It was readily recognised by Mr Cross, the owner of the Arthur Wakefield. Wellington, September 21. The Rev Father Petitjean, a well known Roman Catholic priest, dropped dead in St Mary’s Cathedral this evening, about halfpast five. The immediate cause was heart disease, Wellington, September 22. Produce prices are as follows : —Flour, £l3 to £l3 10s ; oats, 2s 4d to 2s 8d ; maize, 4s to 4s 3d, market overstocked ; bran,*in full supply, 1s 2d to Is 3d ; pollard, 7s, 7b lOd ; wheat (milling), no sale ; chick, 3s fid to 4s 6d ; hafns and bacon, market overs ocked, 6d to 8d ; cheese, fid ; potatoes, £.3 15s. Hokitika, September 22. The secretary to the Mount Rangitoto Silver Mine Company has received the following telegram from Mr Kirkland, of Mel-
bourne —“ Latest assay of Eangitoto ore
gives 800 ounces to one ton of ore.” Westport, September 22.
A human skeleton has been found buried on the bank of the Ohika Hiver, twelve miles from Westport. The flood washed away the bank, revealing the bones, partly shrouded in a sack. On the feet were water tight boots. The skull was smashed, evidently indicating murder. Akaroa, September 22.
A man named George Bouncer has committed suicide bv hanging himself at German Bay. He mounted a stool and suspended himself to the roof of the cowshed by a leg-rope, and kick the stool from under him.
Dunedin, September 21
The Fire Brigade are making arrangements for their demonstration to be held on Boxing Day. Australian and New Zealand Brigades are to be invited. The Harbor Board are requesting the Government to allow the Colonial Engineer to come to Dunedin to inspect the proposed site of the harbor works.
