EAST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual meeting of this committee was held last evening at the Gloucester street school. Present—Mr G. L. Lee (chairman), Rev W. J. Habens, and Messrs Thomson, Rose, Kirk, Parr, and Jameson. The chairman reported that the contract for the swimming bath at the main school had been signed, and the work was in progress. Application had been made to the City Council and to the insurance offices for contributions towards the construction of the bath. The chairman, the Rev W. J. Habens, and Mr Colborne-Veel, were appointed a subcommittee to wait upon the Minister of Education with reference to the contribution from the district, which the school committee are of opinion should only be onesixth. It was decided that the fortnight’s holidays to the district schools should commence on Friday next. The chairman said he had accepted the revised plans of the head master’s house, as he considered they were in accordance with the committee’s wishes. After some discussion on the Inspector’s report previously considered, Mr Habens moved—- “ That the committee agree with the inspector in recommending that two additional teachers be appointed at Gloucester street school; and that the chairman be requested to lay before the Minister a comparative statement of the number of children instructed by each teacher in the three large schools in Christchurch, and of the average cost per child ; and further, to report that the average attendance during the past four weeks is more than during the last quarter.” Mr Rose seconded the motion, which was agreed to. A letter was read from the Minister, saying the fcommittee were labouring under a misapprehension as to his having consented to the payment of the salary at present paid to the head master. The subcommittee previously appointed were requested to confer with the Minister on this matter. Letters from the Education Department were read confirming arrangement made with Mrs Hill as to salary, sanctioning remission of rate as recommended by the committee, but could not contribute towards the fife and drum band proposed to be organised in connection with the main school. Mr Loughrey wrote, giving the average daily attendance at the schools in the district for past week as follows; Gloucester belt, 102. Nineteen scholars bad left daring
last month, and sixty-one had been admitted. Cn the recommendations of Mr Loughrey and Miss Bolton the appointment of Miss Flinders as pupil teacher at the Gloucester street school, in place of Miss Kissell, was made, subject to the approval of the Minister. The secretary was instructed to ask Mr Loughrey to suggest any alterations he might desire in the regulations for the district schools previous to being revised by the committee. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
