It is announced that Mr Woolner, R.A., has nearly completed the full-size model for the statue of John Stuart Mill. The report presented at the meeting of the Grand Junction Canal Company stated that the number of claims sent in on account of the Regent's Park explosion were 1094, amounting to £95,480. of which 1054 had been settled for £63,660. Forty-six cases of casts and photographs taken from the German excavations at Olympia have lately been sent to Berlin. These excavations, it is stated, will be recommenced about the middle of September. Lady Herbert of Lea is said to be writing a book on the position of the wife and mother in the fourth century, in wnich she traces the resemblauce between the domestic life of the present day and that of the early Christians. The Academy states that a project has been set on foot to erect a monument at Pesth to the Hungarian statesman and patriot, Francis Deak. Foreigners as well as native artists are invited to compete for the construction of this monument, and three prizes are offered for the best designs. The cost iB not to exceed 100,000 florins. The Senate of the University of London has decided to adopt the report of the Committee of Convocation recommending the prayer of the Memorial of Trinity College, London, in favor of the conferment of musical degrees by the University on the basis of the ordinary matriculation examination, A committee will shortly be appointed to prepare the scheme of the examinations for the respective degrees of Bachelor and Doctor in Music.
