Tuesday, September 5. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness.—James Grieves, arrested by Constable Moutray, was fined 10s. LICENSING COURT, CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, September 5. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq (chairman), and R. J. 8. Haiman, H. J. Tancred, and G. L. Lee, Esqs, Commissioners.] The quarterly sitting of the Lincensing Court was held this morning, when the following applications were heard : J. E. Bashford, Colombo Btreet; wine and beer license. Mr Thomas appeared to support the application, and presented a petition in its favor signed by about 150 persons. He said the rooms were used as luncheon rooms, and were largely frequented by up-country residents and townspeople. Application granted ; no liquor to be sold after eight o'clock In the evening except on Thursdays and Saturdays, when refreshments may be supplied until eleven o'clock. Thomas Broeks ; hotel license, corner of St Asaph street west. Mr George Harper appeared for the applicant, and handed in a plan of the present house and plans for a house which the applicant purposed building. Application refused ; as also an application for a wine and beer license for the premises. John Johnston, Colombo street south ; hotel license. Mr Thomas appeared for the applicant. Inspector Buckley told the Court that the house was not quite finished, and had only the bare allowance of rooms required by the Ordinance. Adjourned to next quarterly meeting, to enable applicant to add to the building. Michael Joyce, Springston ; hotel licence. Mr Thomaß appeared to support the application. Mr Garrick appeared to oppose, on the ground that the house was immediately alongside the district school. Mr Thomas presented a petition from the residents in the district, expressing the necessity for an accommodation house for travellers in the district, and as to the suitableness of the applicant to conduct such a house. Mr Garrick said he was prepared to produce evidence as to the non-necessity of Buch a house in the district and to the premises adjoining the school, and called Mr Laurie, chairman of the school committee, who stated that the house proposed to be licensed immediately adjoined the school. It was two and three-quarters miles from another hotel, and there were four hotels within Ja radius of four miles from this place. There was but very little traffic now on the road, and in his opinion no necessity whatever for the house. With the exception of one or two signatures on the petition in favour of the license, there were only one or two of the persons within two miles from the village of Springston. The Chairman said the police report was not favourable to the house in its present state, and the Court were not prepared to grant the license. Application refused. Mary Jane Nash, Btanmore road north; wine and beer license. Mr Thomas appeared to oppose the application. The Court held that there was no necessity for such a house in the locality, and refused the application. James Bosser, Newtown ; hotel license. Mr Harper appeared to support the application, and Mr Wynn Williams to oppose it. Mr Harper produced the plans of the building. He had been over the premises himself, and could speak of their suitableness for an hotel, which was very much required in the district. If the application were granted, Mr Bosser would transfer the licence in nine days to Mr Smith, who was at present managing the Crown Hotel. The chairman said the Court had fully considered the application on previous occasions, and they could not see that the circumstances had altered since the application was made. Application refused. An application by same person for a wine and beer license for same premises was also refused. C. W. Smart, corner of Durham and St Asaph street west, hotel licence. Mr Harper appeared for the applicant, and put in plaDB of the building, and also a petition in favor of the house. The Rev. 8. Macfarlune and Mr Willis appeared to oppose the licence being granted, and observed to the Court that the petition in favour of the applicant was signed only by the residents in the neighborhood, and the circumstances had not altered 6ince the license was last refused. The chairman said the Court had decided to refuse the application. An application for a wine and beer license was also refused, John Thomson, corner of Colombo street and South town belt; wine and beer license. Mr Thomas opposed the application, and said a similar application had previously been refused to these premises; application refused. D. W. Hamilton, New Brighton ; hotel license. Mr Slater appeared to support the application, and Mr Thomas to oppose ; license refused. James Holt, St Asaph street west; wine and beer license. Mr O'Neill appeared for the applicant. The Court considered that as there was a licensed houße near these premises, there was no occasion for a license there ; refused. John Paynton ; application to remove license to premises on adjoining section at New Brighton. Mr Thomas for applicant. Mr Garrick to oppose. The application was adourned until next quarterly sitting, as it was bhown that the new premises were still unfinished. TRANSFERS. The following tiausters were confirmed ; BriUuuia Hotel, T. R. Smith was granted, on the distinct understanding that no occanion should be given for the future for the complaint hitherto made against this house. The Court then rose.
