ASTRONOMICAL NOTES FOR THE MONTH (SEPTEMBER).
The aspect of the heavens during the present and ensuing months in the evening and at midnight are perhaps the most uninteresting of the year. Venus and Mars are enshrouded in the beams of the sun, and Jupiter sets about midnight. There will be two eclipses during the present month, one of the moon on the 4d, but invisible In New Zealand, the other of the sun in the forenoon ot the 18d, visible as a partial one. The sun is in the sign Virgo, and will be until the 23d, when he enters Eibra, at which time we shall have equal day and night. The length of day on the Ist will be about lOh 57m, and on the 15th about llh 38m. Phases of the Moon. Morning ... 3 59 Afternoon .. 4 18 9 41 10 15 3 51 4 15 9 32 9 58 The moon will be nearest to the earth lad 3h a.m, and at greatest distance 27d Hi a.m. Mercury—Bd IBh p.m. w’ll be at greatest distance from the sun; lod 16h a.m. in greatest elongation, 26d e<r 20m east; and if the evening should be clear, may possibly be seen after sunset; 20d lOh a.m. in conjunction with the moon, Mercury Odeg 2m north and 29d 8h a.m. in greatest heliocentric latitude Booth. Venus—l4d 8h p.m. will be in conjunction with the moon, Venus 6deg 43m south : and on the 24d 8h a.m. at greatest elongation, 46deg 6m west. Mars—l2d 6h p.m. will be at the greatest distance from the sun, and on the I7d at noon in conjunction with the moon. Mars Odeg 31m north. Jupiter is an evening star, on the meridian about 4h 47m p.m ; and on the 23d 5h a.m. will be in conjunction with the moon, Jupiter sdeg 43ra north. Saturn is an evening star, on the 3d 6h p.m. will be in conjunction with the moon, Saturn Odeg 29dm south; and again 30d lOh p.m. will be in conjunction with the moon, Saturn Odeg 18m south.
