AMUSEMENTS.

THE LYDIA HOWARDE TROUPE. There was a large and enthusiastic audience at the Music Hall last evening,' when the ever popular burlesque of " Chilperic" was re-produced. The piece, which is one of the very best which the company have produced, was played with great success throughout, whilst the music was even better rendered than upon previous occasions. Miss Howarde, who was in good voice, sang her music excellently, notably the song of " One gentle heart," for which she was loudly applauded by the audience. Misses Navaro and ]N"ye were also in splendid voice, and contributed in no small degree to the success of the burlesque; the former lady securing an encore for the really able manner of her rendering of "Say, once more," and the latter lady receiving similar compliments for her finished and artistic style of acting in the mad scene. The other characters, especially Messrs Power, Cary, and Alexander, were, as usual, well and carefully enacted, whilst the chorusses met with a most enthusiastic and genuine rocognition at the hands of the audience. We think the management would do well in giving one or two more representations of this excellent burlesque, as it is a piece that does not weary or tire the audience during its performance, but on the other hand, tends to enliven and keep every one in the, very best of spirits, and on the tip-toe of speculation! Thjs evening Miss Lydia Howarde will seek the favours of a Christchurch audience, and with suck pieces as "The Trial by Jury,'• and the favourite burlesque of "Nemesis," we feel certain that a crowded house will be the result.
