POLITICAL NEWS.
(From a correspondent of the Press.") Wellington, August 28. Mr Fitzherbert's abandonment of the Speakership and acceptance of the Premier•hip, is now asserted to be a baseless fabrication. It is not altogether so, but it seems to be settled that he is not included in the change. Rumour now points to Hon John Hall as a possible Premier and Major Atkinson as leader in the Lower Houße, or some arrangement, including both, as prominent members of the Ministry. A Cabinet meeting was held to-day to decide definitely on the arrangement, but all information is discretely retained. On the character of Mr Haughton's alleged offence becoming known, the chief law officer laid an information, and within an hour of the issue of the warrant, bo was arreßted in Dunedin. He hnd been given time to clear the country by those most immediately and seriously affected, but the Crown has accepted the position of prosecutor. He will be brought up by the first steamer, and care will evidently have to be exercised at his landing.
