MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, August 28, (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M., and Cass, Esq, J.P. Drunk and Disorderly.— Two inebriates who appeared for the first time were each fined ss. John Johnson;was fined 10s. John Quinn, arrested for being drunk while in charge of a horse, and using abusive language was fined 20s. Larceny op 'Jewellery. —Thomas A. Hassal and William Cassidy, charged on remand with above offence was further remanded for eight days, to be brought up sooner should the prosecutor arrive in Christchurch. Stealing from the Person. —Alfred J. Kent, who had been arrested on the charge of stealing a purse containing m oney from a man at the Papanui Hotel, was on the application of the police, remanded for eight days.
Wife Desertion. —John Clarkson, who had been arrested for this offence, was remanded until Tueaday. Petty Larcenies. -Solomon Roos was charged with stealing two work and other small boxes, and sundry other articles. Accused had been seen by Sergeant-Major O’Grady in the Canterbury Hotel, at Lyttelton, on the 23rd inst, trying to sell a sheet for 2s, which was identified in Court by Mrs Blythe, boarding-house keeper, Whately road, as her property. He had been staying at the house for a few days during last week. A charge of stealing a musical-box from the house of |Mr C. Williams, Armagh street, was next preferred against accused. It was shown that in the absence of Mrs Williams and servant, on the afternoon of the 16th inst, he had gone into the house by the back door, which was left unlocked, and abstracted the musical-box, and also broke open another small box, On the next day he sold the former to the barman of the Garrick Hotel, for ss. The next charge heard was for stealing a work-box containing papers, &c, on the 19th inst, from the residence of Miss Bolton, Armagh street, which was identified by that lady. Accused had afterwards sold the box for £l, to Ellen O’Leary, at Lea’s boarding-house. The remaining charge preferred was for stealing a work-box from the house of the Rev J. Zacharia'a. Accused had asked for relief on the afternoon of the 22nd, at Mr Zaohariah’s house, and on the following morning the work-box, containing photograhs and papers, was missing. One of the windows of the house was found to have been raised during the night. The box had been sold by accused to F. Ashworth, blacksmith, at Lyttelton, for 12s fid, on the 23rd inst. In reply to the Bench, accused said he was not guilty. Sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, or twelve months in all. REVISION COURT. DRAINAGE RATE.
The following objections against the assessments made for the drainage rate were heard before the .Resident Magistrate this morning :—Charles Bush (S.W. quarter), assessed at £65, reduced to £52, as it was shown that the latter amount is the rental received for the property. Charles Bush (Spreydon district), assessed at £2B, reduced to £26. John O’hJeill (Heathcote district), assessed at £SO; assessment confirmed as tho objector did not appear. Edward Mitchell (Avon district), assessed at £36; assessment confirmed as objector did not appear. Edmund Green (Avon district, seven objections) ; three at £26, reduced to £2O each ; £5, reduced to £3 10s; £36, reduced to £3O; £46, reduced to £3O; £26, assessment confirmed. Wm Flesher (Avon district), £9l, reduced to £7O. J. R. Lysaght (Avon district), assessed at £4OO, reduced to £250. P. Taaffe (Avon district), assessed at £IOO ; assessment confirmed, as objector did not appear.
