Simonsen’s Opera Company played the “ Hermit’s Bell” last night to a crowded house with great success; they received numerous encores. Madame Simonsen and Signor Morley were cheered. The opera will probably be repeated for some time. Wellington, August 25.
It is understood that Mr Bridge is no longer a director of the National Bank, and that he ceased to be so shortly after his return to London. It is said that his conduct towards the Bank of New Zealand last year has had something material to do with his retirement.
Captain Ferries has requested an official inquiry into the respective duties and responsibilities of commanders of Royal Mail steamers and local pilots on entering New Zealand harbors. Captain Ferries brought the Zealandia into port and alongside the wharf this morning without a pilot. They will also pay the preliminary expenses incurred by the proposed new gas company, the formation of which will now be abandoned.
