THE OFFICE OF MAYOR.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sik,—A great deal is being said just now about the office of Mayor, which will be shortly vacant. The general opinion is, that this officer ought to be elected by the ratepayers, especially as there is no member of the Council who has served long enough that is at all eligible for so. important an office. I think it will be found that it is almost impossible to get any person of standing to subject himself to the ridiculous position of being dubbed “Your Worship the Mayor.” Why the old title was changed to the barbarous one now held by the person who represents the civic chair, it is hard to say. Surely it is far more sensible to have a modern and business-like title for such a body as the Council, than to adopt the silly old title that associates one's ideas with John Gilpin, et hoc genus omne (ask the Mayor what that is). Why, I really don’t think there can be found a single individual with the slightest sense who would take such an office with such a title. Yours, &c., GAPESICK.
