AMUSEMENTS.

THE LYDIA HOWARDS TROUPE. “ The Beggar’s Opera ” was produced last evening at the Music Hall. There was a capital attendance, all parts of the house being well filled. The piece itself is one that does not call for much comment, being both exceedingly tame in itself as a dramatic production, whilst it has the disadvantage of being too antiquated to suit the present taste of play-goers, who, unless reading the history of the opera, as published a few days back, would have been utterly at a loss to understand the meaning of the play at all. As played last night, it had not one redeeming point about it, nor was there any chance of those who enacted characters therein being able to make anything out of their respective parts. The present company are undoubtedly good burlesque performers, that being their particular forte, but any departure from the same to such a class of piece as “ The Beggar’s Opera” is a decided mistake, especially when their popularity as an opera-bouffe troupe has been so well established, We are given to understand that the opera was placed on the stage in order to allow the leading lady of the company. Miss Howarde, a short respite, as her health has been much impaired of late. We sincerely hope she will soon be able to rejoin the ranks of her confreres, and that burlesque will again reign triumphant at the Music Hall. The smart little farce of “ The Day After the Wedding” concluded the evening’s entertainment. The same programme will be repeated this evening.
