Melbourne.—The "Argus" of the 16th instant reports :—" In the import market we report a good trade demand all round. Teas, sugar, dried fruits, &c, have met with a good inquiry all day, numerous sales having been effected, tliough less of a special demand has been experienced to-day than has been noticeable of late. Klour is firm, and small lots are still moving off at £l2 15s. Wheat at the auction sale this forenoon evinced a decidedly easier feeling. There was no business done, however, for though a lower rate would have been accepted than has been ruling, yet the biduii.g wus too unsatisfactory even for that; 5s n-j-d was bid, but the parcel offered was withdrawn for 6s. Oats are likewise easier. For a shipment of 000 bags New Zealand mUHiijy 38 3d was accepted, and a email
parcel of Victorian feeding 1 was quitted at 2a lid. For good feeding we quote 3s Id. Maize continues to decline. Of sound descriptions sales ave now making at 3s 9d to 3s lOd for trade purposes. A parcel of faulty Fiji, which was offered by auction, was not sold from the box, but was afterwards cleared off privately at 3s 6d. We note a good trade inquiry for sugars, and numerous sales are making. We also learn that the cargo of the Eagle Wing, consisting of 250 tons of Mauritius, has been taken up by one buyer, and further business is still pending. Teas have not been so largely dealt in, as, owing to the telegraphic news to hand from China, holders have not been so anxious to push sales until the effect on the market becomes developed, and we only hear of about 160 half-chests of fine congous having been sold at up to Is lOd. Privately, telegrams have been received to-day, dated Foo Chow, 6th August, which state that common teas have gone lip 2 taels, and medium teas 1 tael. The exchange, moreever, has risen to 4s—an improvement of fully 6J per cant. No reason is given for this sudden advance, but the rise on teas would imply that the floods referred to in our circulars of 3rd to 6th July, published on the arrival of the Queensland, must have done greater damage to the second crop than was at iirst anticipated; and the advance in the exchange may naturally be traced to the greater scarcity of cover in consequence. Whatever the cause, the rise in exchange must have been very sudden, as a telegram dated Foo Chow, 28th July, was shown to us, which quoted the rates then ruling at 3s 9Jd. Sales of currants "are reported at s|d. In liquids we note the quittance of Gonzales' sherry at £45."
Adelaide. The "Observer" of 'the sth reports:-''A very quiet week has been passed in the grain market. Traders are still disinclined to operate to any extent until fresh advices are received from Europe. A few small sales are reported at 4s lod per bushel on the wharf, but for large lots sellers are are asking- from to id more. The reports from the country all speak of the pood effects produced by the late rains, and the wheat plant everywhere is looking strong aud healthy, though somewhat backward. Flour remains dull at£io 5s to £ll 5s per ton. We note that the New Caledonian Government are calling for tenders for the supply ot 2,400,000 kilogrammes of flour. Bran has been sold at Is per bushel f.o.b. Pollard is quoted at is 6d to Is 7d per bushel. There is no change in oats or barley. The shipments of wheat and (lour for the Week ending July 29th, reached 3380 tons, making a total exportation for the year of 151,000 tons." The following telegrams appear in the "Argus." August Bth—Wheat is steady at 4s lid. August loth—A sale of wheat has been made at 4s 9d.
