NEWS OF THE DAY.

St. Andrew’s Church,—The adjourned annual meeting of the congregation of the above church will be held this evening at half-past seven. Press Club.—The adjourned meeting of the Press Club wll be held at Warner’s Hotel tomorroweveningat? p m. Atthiameeting the committee will report the result of their deputation. A full attendance of members is requested, as the rules will be revised and adopted.

Sale op Property. —Mr Charles Clark sold the well-known freehold and run belonging to Messrs Pitzroy and Acland, known as Heslerton, yesterday, The property comprises 440 acres of freehold and 13,000 of run, with sheep, improvements, &c, There was a good attendance, and after a spirited competition Mr Clark disposed of the property for the sum of £6900.

The San Francisco Mail.—This mail, consisting of fifty-two bags—viz, thirty-nine for Christchurch, four for Lyttelton, four for Timaru, and five for Oamaru, was landed from the R.M.S.S. Zealandia, shortly after 9 am. yesterday, and the Christchurch, Tirairu, and Oamaru portion was sent through the tunnel by the 9.45 a.m. goods train.

Christchurch Poultry Association. — Intending exhibitors at the forthcoming exhibition are reminded that the entries will close positively at six o’clock this evening at Mr J, G. Hawkes’s salerooms, Hereford street, Already a number of entries in the game classes have been received from Timaru, and also some from Lyttelton for the flying match, and this show promises to be the most successful the association has yet had.

Scab Ordinance.—Mr G. H. Moore, of Glenmark, was yesterday at Leithfield Court, charged on forty-three informations, with being the owner of 17,000 sheep, infected with s6ab, on or about September 9th, which, after six months’ notice, had not been cleaned. The evidence showed that a scabby lamb had been found. Evidence was led at great length, but as the case was not proved to the satisfaction of the Bench, the information was dismissed. The remaining informations were withdrawn.

Intbrprovincial Football Match,— The match on Saturday will be between the following Fifteen and the rest of the Club : —Messrs J. Anderson (captain), J. Barker, T. Chapman, E. Chapman, E.J.Cotterill, J.R. Evans, R. Hamilton, G.H.Lee, H. McCardell, H.W.Moore, L. M. Cllivier,P. Pilling, D. Potts, A. Potts, and G. Potts. Play to commence at 3 pm. sharp, and the Fifteen to wear red and black. It is to be hoped that a wellcontested match will take place, as it will materially assist the committee in their selection of the representative team, which will be made immediately after the match. The College Boys are invited to take part in the game.

Presentations on the Peninsula.— Presentations are the order of the day on the Peninsula. Mr Bishop, of Okain’s Bay, received two last week, and very well he deserved them. Mr Herbert Bridge, telegraph clerk, who is about to be removed to Oxford, will also be the happy recipient of several addresses, purses, &c. The Good Templars are about to present him with a suite of regalia ; the band boys belonging to the fife and drum band are also getting up a subscription for a suitable present, and the general public are going to show their esteem and respect for this very valuable and promising young Government officer by a substantial presentation of sovereigns. We request the public to inspect an improved cooking range which has been manufactured by Messrs Osborn, Baden, and Hern, Kilmore street, near Whately road. We think it is a range well adapted to the wants of the colony, being both economical in fuel and very low in price.— [An vx.J

Drapers and Clothiers’ Association. —A general meeting of this association was held in the Foresters’ Hall on Wednesday evening ; Mr Gray in the chair. A motion proposing an alteration in the name of the association to that of the Early Closing Association, was discussed and lost. The Is 6d entrance fee hitherto made on admission of members was done away with, so as to give every facility for members joining. A sum of £3 3s was voted, for the purpose of giving two prizes, one of £2 2s, and one of £1 Is, for the two best papers (not exceeding four sheets of foolscap in length) on the best means of obtaining six o’clock closing on Saturdays, the competition to he restricted to members of the association. It was arranged that the last entertainment of the season will be given in the new Oddfellows’ Hall, where an attractive programme will be presented. A sub-committee was appointed to carry out the arrangements. A subcommittee appointed to obtain the names of all gentlemen not members of the association, and to use efforts to induce them to join, repotted satisfactory progress. Some correspondence was read and other business transacted. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
