ASHBURTON PLOUGHING MATCH.

Working Committee Messrs Frisby, Atkinson, Black, and Simpson. Judges— Messrs Wm. Orr, W. Brown, and Robert Miller. Judges for Special Prizes—Messrs D. McLaren, Scott, H. J. Smith, The annual match of the Ashburton district was held yesterday on the land of Mr Houston, about two miles distant from the township. The land selected by the committee was not what ploughmen would desire for favourably showing their skill, being clad in its native tussock, and burnt for the occasion ; the ground was also very lumpy and friable. It was, however, Hobson’s choice with the committee, who have scoured the whole district south of the river to secure a good site. The weather was beautifully warm, but a strong N.W. gale prevailed throughout the day. The creature comforts were dispensed by Mr Harris of the Longbeach Junction Hotel. The inevitable wheel of fortune was on the ground, but his wares were blown away early in the day, and he was compelled to beat an undignified retreat. As will be seen by the list the entries were far more numerous than in any previous year, and the work on the whole, considering the unfavorable nature of the soil, exceedingly good. We are glad to notice the almost complete absence of false cut, and the committee are to be congratulated for so stringently enforcing this rule. Entries. FIRST CLASS SINGLE FURROW.
