BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LYTTELTON. Monday, August 7. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs McDonald. W. Graham, H. Allwright, F, Graham, H. Hawkins, W. Holmes, and T. A. W. Parsons. The clerk stated he had received £25 13s during the past week. Correspondence was read — From the Secretary for Public Works, enclosing copies of plans of the Lyttelton drainage works. Fiom Rev B. W. Dudley, asking whether it wis really necessary for him to sign the the deed of dedication at Lyttelton. He was reluctant to leave his parish without sufficient reason, aud if it could be managed would prefer signing it at Rangiora where it could be forwarded by book post. From Mr H. N. Nalder, offering a piece of land between the section his house stands on and the adjoining one, if the Council would lay down a brick drain to carry off storm water from part of reserve 68 above Sumner road and St David street. In reference to Mr Nalder's letter it was resolved—" That the foreman of works take steps at once to make a temporary drain to carry off the water, and to report re levels, next Monday night." With regard to Mr Illingwoith's stock-yard the estates committee's report was brought up. It recommended that a piece of ground on Mr Illingworlh's run on the other side of the hill about two chains square as pointed out by him be approved of. Agreed to. The foreman of works' report was then read, It gave measurements and estimates of following concrete channels :—lst. From London street to back of gas works, Sumner road, 12 chains 56ft, 2ft wide. 2ad. From Mitre corner, Norwich Quay, to Dublin street, and from Oxford street to Donald street, 10 chains 14ft, 2ft wide. 3rd. From Dublin street to London street, 5 chains 18ft, Ift 6in wide, and also recommending the upper part of this street, from Winchester street to Captain Anderson's, be channelled, and that the 9in pipe drain in Dublin street be continued across Winchester street to Coleridge street. 4th. Recommending concrete channelling to be laid at upper end of Oxford street, and part of Ripon street, to protect new made ground at junction of streets. sth. Stating that the residents on Bridle path, above Captain McLellan'p, were willing to contribute towards a concrete channel to be laid there. 6th. Recommending a concrete dam to be built at the mouth of the St David street culvert. The report further stated the main drain in Dublin street was completed, the different roads being metalled as ordered, and the Governor's Bay road was in course of repair. It also recommended the new fence in Dampier's Bay should be painted. In reference to Ticehnrst road, it stated it was no use to metal it till it had been widened, as it was scarcely passable for carts." Clauses Nos 1,2, 3, and 5 were passed, the inhabitants to contribute one-third in the latter case. Clause No 4 was ordered to stand over for further consideration. The dam in St David street was ordered to be done at once, and also the painting of the fence in Dampier's Bay, The Mayor and Cr Hawkins were appointed a committee to confer with the foreman of works regarding improvement of Ticehurst road, with power to act. It was resolved that the New Zealand Shipping Company be written to, requesting them to put up spouting at once at their premises on Simeon Quay. Accounts amounting to £ll6 3s Bd, were passed for payment. Cr F. Graham brought the question of the new charge for haulage before the Council. After discussion, the matter dropped. Cr Allwright [called attention to the fact that the new town clock was placed in a room in the Government buildings, and asked when it was to be erected. No one being able to give any reliable information on the subject, the matter dropped, and the Council adjourned,
