(Per Press Agency .) LATEST EROM AUSTRALIA. (By Submarine Cable.J Sydney, August 3. The steamer Barrabool, from Sydney to Melbourne, came into collision with the steamer Queensland, bound for Sydney, north of Wilson’s Promontory to-day. The latter sank within an hour. The crew and passengers were saved. iThe Barrabool’s bow was stove in. The Noumea, from New Caledonia, recently reported off the coast short of provisions, has reached Broken Bay. The crew and passengers have suffered considerably. Arrived—Hero. Messrs Gilchrist, Watt, and Co write today stating that, on the 21)th of May, they wrote to our Postmaster-General applying to have the Pacific Service route changed. No answer has yet been received. A man named Otrey yesterday, at Young, shot his housekeeper then took strychnine. Melbourne, August 3. Messrs McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co have arranged a monthly steam communication between Hobart Town and New Zealand. intbßpeoyincial. At a conference of the Borough Council and the Highway Boards held last night to consider the Counties Bill and other matters now before Parliament, the following resolution was carried unanimously—“ That in the opinion of this meeting all the gold fields revenue should be handed over to the local governing bodies of the localities in which it is raised.” The Counties Bill did not seem to find much favor. Opinions were divided regarding separation. No resolution or definite expression of opinion was arrived at for or against, Wellington, August 3. In reply to inquiries by this Government, the New South Wales Government telegraph that no further action has been taken re a second cable, because no answer has yet been received from the Victorian Government.
