LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monday, July 24. The Council met on Monday night. Present—Ore H. Allwright (in chair), W. Holmes, W. Graham, T. A. W. Parsons, P. Cunningham, and McDonald. The clerk stated he had received £49 183 6d since last meeting. Correspondence was read— Prom J. Malcolmson, W. 8. McGowan, and eighteen ratepayers residing in St David street and Sumner road, below Municipal Beserve 68, drawing attention to the drainage from the reserve being allowed to run over some of their properties, and asking the Council to see to the matter; also, pointing out the position in which the stockyard of the lessee of the reserve is placed, and the filthy state in which it was kept. From Mr Joseph Illingworth, asking perxnispion to quarry stone at Sticking Point, From Mr Thomas Hodge, complaining of the bad state of the Bridle path between Mr Cunningham's gate and his house. From Mr W. Cowlin, calling attention to bad state of the road in Cass' Bay, stating it was unsafe .for traffic. From Mr John Forrester, stating Messrs Morton and White had given him notice to fence the north boundary of the reserve he rented from the Council, asking what he should do, as he had already fenced all he had agreed to do. In reference to the petition from the ratepayers in St David's street and Sumner road, it was resolved—" That the masonic authorities be written to, asking their permission to carry a drain through their section on the Sumner road to carry off the storm water complained of." Regarding the nuisance of Mr Illingworth's stockyard, it was determined to obtain the solicitor's opinion as to the Council's power to abate or remove the same. Besolved—" That Mr Hodge's letter be referred to the foreman of works. Regarding Mr Cowlan's complaint as to the state of the road on Cass' Bay, the foreman of works was instructed to visit the place complained of and report next meeting. Mr Illiogworth's application to rent a quarry at the Point on the Sumner road, was ordered to stand over till Monday next, the foreman of works to visit the locality and report. Mr Forrester's letter |was referred to the borough solicitor. A report from the foreman of the Fire Brigade was read, from which it appeared the hose lent by the Government to Lyttelton had been removed by the railway engi neer's orders, as the tank that supplies the locomotives had broken down, and the hose was required to supply them with water. There was no hose any good in Lyttelton, so that if a fire should occur the brigade would be helpless. The foreman recommended the Council to try and procure 250 feet of hose either from Mr Harris or from Dunedin at once, as it would be two months before the order sent home could be executed. The chairman stated that the Council would have been placed in a false position had a fire broken out, and he was amazed the engineer had taken such a step without letting the Council know. Crs Cunningham and McDonald also ex« pressed their surprise on the subject, and after discussion it was resolved—" That Mr Hurii hi telegraphed to, Asking him if he

can supply or rent 250 ft hose to the Council, | and that failing this the necessary quantitybe at once telegraphed for from Dunedin." Cr McDonald laid correspondence on the table referring to roads through Joycetown. Discussion on the subject was adjourned for a week. The chairman reported that the clerk had summoned twenty defaulting ratepayers, as requested. Tenders for metal for Jackson's road were opened, and a tender at 7s per yard was accepted. Resol-ed—" That some f utther suggestions re Municipal Corporations Act, recommended by the borough solicitor, be forwarded to Mr Murray-Aynsley." Respecting the drainage of Dublin street, it was stated the consent of all the owners of land had been obtained save one, who resided in Christchurch. It was determined that tenders should be called for the work as soon as this person's consent had been gained. After a discussion re main drainage, the Council adjourned.
