Sheep Inspection. —lfc is notified in tho Gazette that Mr Reginald Foster has been appointed Acting Sheep Inspector, Titanic Steel Company.— A meeting of shareholders will be held at the Central Hotel on Wednesday next, at 7 30 p,m. Petition, —We understand that the petition to his Excellency the Governor praying for the release of William Potter Townend, sentenced at the last criminal session of the Supreme Court to six months’ imprisonment, is being very numerously signed. Cheap Johns.— Despite the prohibition of the City Council against the occupation of the western side of Cathedral square by the Cheap Johns, they were in great force on Saturday evening. Business appeared very brisk, and there was a large crowd assembled, to whom they appealed against the action of the City Council. Canterbury Railways.— A comparative statement of the traffic for the month of June is published. The receipts were as follows Merchandise, £11,617 9s lid ; rents, £B4 12s 4d ; wharfage and cranage, £1585 5s ; passengers, £5312 6s lOd ; parcels, £366 19s 5d ; horses, carriages, &c, £l2B 16s lOd ; total, £19,095 9s 4d. The receipts during June, 1876, amounted to £12,261 12s sd. Football.—A match, Christchurch v Lyttelton, each fifteen men, was played on Saturday on Cranmer square. Both teams played well, the former team, however, being rather the strongest keeping the ball pretty well all through in the Lyttelton quarters. Christchurch had four tries for goal, but did not succeed in kicking one. Bolton was the nearest, as after a'capitally worked dribble he kicked a try immediately under the line. When time was called at half-past four neither side had scored, and the game was accounted drawn#

BURGLARY. —The shop of Mr Mann, butcher, Colombo was entered some time during Friday night, and over £8 abstracted from the till. It is supposed that a skeleton key was used to unlock the door, as one or two doors higher up the street were found to be unlocked on Saturday morning. It is said the police have gained some slight clue to the individual. Burnham Industrial School, —A return of the inmates of the Industrial School at Burnham for June is published in the Gazette. Licensed to farmers—Boys, 4, To currier— Boy, 1 ; general servant girl, 1 ; leaving 75 inmates. Football,— Kaiapoi v. Eangiora.—A match between teams representing these places was played on Saturday afternoon, at the Kaikauui paddock. The players for Eangiora were—Messrs T. Chapman (captain), W. Chapman, B. Chapman, R. Chapman, E, R. Good, E. G. Hawkes, D. Martin, Watson, G. Merton, J. Boys, and J. Cameron. For Kaiapoi Montague H. Smith (captain), W. B. Willock, F. N. Robinson, H. Brown, T. Dudson, J. Perrin, W. Stringer, W. C. Bean, A. A, Fooks, B. Fortman, K. McKenna, J. Wachsmann, W. Smith, R.'LaNauze. The ball was kicked off by the home team, which had the eastern goal, and for a long time it was played in the centre of the ground, but Rangiora, by a piece of fair play, obtained a touch down, when E, Chapman tried to kick a goal, but failed. At half time goals were changed, and before long, by a piece of very good play, Watson ran with the ball behind the goal and obtained a touch down, from which B. Chapman kicked a goal. The ball during . the game was several times in close proximity to both goals, but at last Kaiapoi got a touch down, when Wachsmann kicked a goal for his side. As it wanted only a few minutes to time the game was then concluded, without either side having gained a decided advantage.
