ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTE. The Board met op Thursday, July 20th. Present —All the members. The clerk reported having received ordinary rates, £lOl 2s 4d; Waimakariri, £6 2s 6d ; special, £7 10a ; deposits, £3l ; total, £l4B 14s lOd. Correspondence was read from Mr Hitchens, reply re cutting trees that are hanging over the road. From Mr W. K. Wilson ; also, from Mr J. Frame, re bad state of South Town belt, between Madras street and Gas Works road, stating it was quite impossible for residents to get in and out to their premises. From Mr G. D. Lockhart, re laying of tramways, requesting permission to lay same along the Ferry road in continuation of proposed line in Christchurch. From Mr J. A. Cunningham, circular, informing the Board of business done at the preliminary conference of chairmen of Road Boards, held in June last. From Mr J. Hall and eight others (Mr Hall also waited on the Board to sustain petition), requesting that the road at the entrance to Waltham and Colombo road, and running parallel with the latter, might be formed and shingled. From the Railway Engineer, reply declining on behalf of the Government to accede to the request of the Board to be allowed to drain at Waltham into the Government railway drain. Prom Donoghue and Smith re contract for shingling Waltham roads. From Mr P. Pope, complaining of a nuisance caused by a large pool of stagnant water at the back of his premises, which was dangerous, and also conducive to disease. Prom Mr Thomas Sorton, re bad state of side channel in Creek road, Phillipstown, complaining of his neighbor carting over it and the footpath, thus making it bad for pedestrians. From Mrs Terry, re remission of rates. From Mr Klingenstein, Morton’s Hotel, Sumner, requesting some metal on the road opposite his premises. From Mr Bamford, re bad state of footpath on the Perry road, between the quay and the district school. Messrs Merry and Mercer waited on the Board requesting it to do something in reference to drainage by their properties. In reference to the above letters and deputations, it was resolved that the matters referred to by Messrs Hitchms, Pope, Sorton, Klingenstein, and Bamford be attended to ; that the applications of Mr Evers and Mrs Terry, for remission of rates, be held in abeyance ; that copies of the letters of Messrs Frame and Wilson be forwarded to the City Council, requesting them to join the Board in forming a footpath, and pay a moiety of the cost, and to have the work done immediately ; that Mr Lockhart’s, Mr J. Hall’s, Messrs Merry’s, Mercer’s, and Donoghue and Smith’s applications be reconsidered at the next meeting, when further information in reference to same will be acquired. The foreman was instructed to put screenings on footpath on section 13, South town belt, and also across the said belt, on permission from the City Council, so as to enable the ratepayers in that part of the district to cross the belt dry. The clerk to write to the Government in reference to the growth of weeds at the bottom of the River Avon, causing the river to be too high, when, after passing accounts to the amount of £222 13s tid, the Board adjourned.
