AMUSEMENTS.

THE LYDIA HOWAEDE TROUPE.

We were pleased to notice a decided improvement in the performance of "La Sylphide" last evening at the Music Hall, both as regards the singing and also the way in which the various characters were enacted. Miss Howarde Avas in capital voice, and sang her music remarkably well, being ably supported by Misses Nye and Navaro, and the rest of the company. The music from " Macbeth" was much better done than on the previous occasion, whilst the various songs by Miss Howarde and the other ladies were rendered far better than before, and elicited from the audience their hearty approval. Mr Cary was also in •better form, and sang the fine Scotch air, " Gather, gather," in rare style. Mr Walter Hill as M ( Haggis was as eccentric as ever, but we would suggest to him the propriety of introducing a little fresh local "gag" each night, as the same items night after night grate rather harshly on the ear, especially when listened to by almost the same audience. Mr Power's make-up and acting was a decided improvement on the first night, and the orchestra more temperate in their accompaniment. The transformation scene to the fairies' dell was even more beautiful than before, and resulted in loud calls for Messrs Brigga and Mason. The same piece will be played this evening, and as the extravaganza is a long one, the management have wisely decided to divide it into three acts. We hear that "Nemesis'' is in active preparation, and will be produced next week. With such a company, and the really good burlesques produced by Miss Howarde, we may safely predict a long and prosperous season for the management.
