Grey’s central committee have placed Mr David Goldie in nomination for City West. A landslip occurred on the railway neat Mercer, last night, extending 100 ft long and 15ft high. As the night train approached the engine-driver observed it. He shut off steam and reversed the engine, but not in time to prevent the locomotive from rushing into the mass of earth. The engine ran off the line and fell over on its side, but both driver and stoker escaped unharmed by jumping off. There were only four passengers on the train, who were all unhurt. A serious mining accident occurred at Woodstock yesterday. Hill and party’s tunnel caved in, burying three men named Stuart Hill, James Hill, and Joseph Roberts, They were expected to attend a lodge meeting last night, but not putting in an appearance search was made, and the accident discovered. A large party commenced to dig them out. James Hill was dead, Eoberts badly injured, Stuart Hill is still in the claim, his legs being jammed with earth, but alive, It will take some time to reach him, the ground being very treacherous. The tunnel fell in at II a,m. Dunedin, July 15. Mr Bell, for libel on the Homan Catholic clergy, has been committed for trial.
