(Per Press Agency.') LATEST FROM EUROPE AND AUSTEALIA. ♦ [By Submarine Cable.'] Wellington, July 13. The Government received last night a long cabic telegram of general news from the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales. The chief items of interest were anticipated by the Agency’s telegram of the previous day. The following are fresh items Sydney, Wednesday. ( Just received, via Cooktown, per steamer from Hong Kong.) There is no sign of the mail steamer yet, The steamer Mecka, from Hong Kong, arrived this morning, and anchored three miles from shore. We boarded her at 7.30, and got a batch of telegrams from the Submarine Telegraph Company, Hong Kong. The Mecka left Hong Kong on the 25th of June. European affairs pacific, There is no indication of war, ,
The Mecka brings 130 passengers, all Chinese, and thirty tons of cargo, for Cooktown. She reports the mail steamer Normanby as having left Hong Kong on the 20th of June for Singapore. The latest European news is to June 16th, but contains nothing of importance. European affairs are being gradually arranged amicably. Hong Kong newspapers of Juno 19th give the latest Reuter’s European telegrams as follows : London, June 12. M. Bremer Moran, the new French Minister to China, has started for Pekin. ADDITIONAL BY TORRES MAIL. London, June 16. It is stated that Russia has waived all objections; and will go hand and hand with the rest of Europe on the Eastern question. The English ironclads ordered to Bessica Bay only assemble in consequence, of the murder of the Consuls, The Duke of Edinburgh is placed in command of the ironclads to further his advancement to the position of Admiral, It is supposed that Germany is backing out of the agreement with Russia. INTERPROYINOIAL. Auckland, July 12. At the annual meeting of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Mr Browning was re-elected director, Mr London, brother of Mr London, M.P.C. was seized with a paralytic stroke while driving, and fell over on the road, dead. Mr Rees addresses his constituents on Friday. There is considerable anxiety respecting the schooner Agnes, which left for the Ghathams three months ago. She is long overdue. Graiiamstown, July 12. Considerable dissatisfaction is expressed at tho indecision and procrastination of Sir G. Gray in (he matter of choosing which constituency he will sit for. In any case, it is looked upon as certain that an Abolitioniso will be returned, and equally certain that his successor will support him so far as native affairs and financial reform are concerned, whether elected at the Thames or the City West. Wellington July 12. The Governor, accompanied by Captain Mating and Col Hervey Phipps, leave ior Nelson in the Luna to-morrow night, at eight o’clock. He will probably return on Tuesday morning next. Wellington, July 13. At the Supreme Court James Shennen charged with committing rape upon his stepdaughter, a child of tender years, was found guilty of attempted rape, and this morning sentenced to ten years’ penal servitude. The prisoner endeavored to make out that the charge was the result of conspiracy between his wife and daughter, as he and his wife had not been living happily for some time. He said he had eleven children dependent upon him for bread, eight being under eleven years and one an infant. Just arrived, after a long passage— Colonist, schooner, from Lyttelton. Dunedin, July 12. The Provincial revenue for the quarter was £159,828, and the expenditure £130,389. The Waste Lauda Board has decided that a woman married after selecting on deferred payment, to a man not possessing an adjoining selection, must occupy or give up the selection ; each must occupy their respective selections. The Star libel case is creating strong feeling amongst tho Roman Catholics. The case is adjourned for further evidence till Saturday, and Mr Bell is admitted to bail, himself in £IOO. A curling match was held on the ice in the North-east Valley yesterday.
