CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

A meeting of the Board of Governors of the College was held yesterday, at 3. p.m, Present—The Primate, Veu Archdeacon Willock, Rev W. J. Habens, Rev 0. Fraser, Messrs Tancred, Malet, Toss will, Veel, Webb, Mellish, Inglis, and Fereday. In the absence of thq chairman, Mr Wm Montgomery, the Most Rev the Primate was voted to the chair, Mr Tosswill said he wished to bring before the meeting a circumstance which occurred in the report of the proceedings of the last meeting. At that meeting Mr Stafford was reported to have said that the Board’s revenue from reserves would be in a short time £IO,OOO. Now he had gone through the schedule of reserves belonging to the Board, and found that for 1876-7 it would be under £3OOO, and up to 18S0 it would probably amount to under £3500 per annum. The income after 1880 was uncertain, aa run rents would in all probability be increased, but it was a high estimate to say that under thu most favorable circumstances their revenue from reserves would in five years exceed £7oiO per annum. Looking at these tacts, as shown by the schedule, Mr Stafford must, he thought, have been misunderstood, or have spoken generally. It was a matter of very great importance to the Board, as he understood that the statement bad been telegraphed all over the colony. Of course the figures he had quoted were exclusive of the reserves for the School of Agriculture, with which they had nothing tq do* The report of the College committee was read as follows; “The committee have to report to the Board that the 'addermist of the Museum, having been suspended by the director, the

committee, after an interview with the director, have dismissed the taxidermist. “The committee recommend the amended plana for the Girls’ High school for the approval of the Board, and suggest that the building should stand back 30ft from Hereford street, and that tenders should be called for the erection thereof. “ The committee recommend that £lO should bo granted to Professor Bickerton to purchase prizes for the first principles of chenrstry and electricity classes. “ The committee also recommend the Board to authorise the Chairman to sign transfer of lease from Davis to Sharpe of reserve No 721, and to give instructions to the committee as to the general management of leases for the future. “ Letters have been received from the lecturers in modern languages and jurisprudence, offering to commence lecturing for the second term at their own risk of the salaries being passed by the Assembly. These letters will be laid before the Board.” Rev W, J. Habens moved that the report be received and adopted. Rev C. Fraser seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Tancred moved—“ That the Government be requested to instruct the Provincial Architect to call for tenders for the erection of the Girls’ High school. ” Mr Hellish seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Rev C, Fraser moved—“ That it be an instruction to the committee to prepare a scheme for leasing the properties of the Board, and also a form of lease, and to submit the same for the approval of the Board, and to recommend the appointment of a legal adviser to the Board.” Mr Veel seconded the motion, which was carried. Rev W. J. Habens moved for a return of the number of students attending the classes during the first term of 1876. The chairman laid the return on the table, as follows :

Eev 0. Fraser moved—“ That an amended return be prepared, distinguishing between the collegiate classes and those of an extra collegiate or popular character, and also the number of individual students attending the collegiate classes.” Mr Malet seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Rev 0, Fraser said that the number attending the collegiate classes was fifty-six. The letters from the lectures on Jurisprudence and Modern Languages referred to in the report of the College committee, were read by the registrar. Rev W. J. Habens moved—” That the lecturers on Modern Languages and Jurisprudence be engaged for the current term, on the terms contained in their letter, and that their classes be advertised.” The motion was seconded and agreed to. A letter was read from Mr C. F. Barker, requesting the signature of the chairman of the Board to the transfer of the lease from Davis to Sharpe of reserve 721. The matter was disposed of by the adoption of the report of the College committee.§ A letter was read from Dr Yon Haast, detailing the steps taken by him to procure the services of a skilled taxidermist from Europe at £220 per annum, and also stating that the glass for the show cases could be obtained very cheap from Europe. Mr Fereday said that with respect to this matter he might state that Fuller, the late taxidermist, had called upon him that day for legal advice as to what amount he could recover under the circumstances of his dismissal, as compensation. Of course, being a governor, ho (Mr Fereday) told him that he could not act for him, but there was no doubt from what he said that he intended to push his claim. Rev 0. Fraser moved—“ That the director of the Museum be authorised to engage a taxidermist through Dr Von Hochstetter, at the present salary, with £52 travelling expenses, salary to commence on his arrival in colony, and that the other matters ia Dr Haast’s letter be referred to the committee for decision.” Mr Malet seconded the motion, which was carried. The next business was the election of chairman. On the motion of Mr Webb, seccnled by Mr Tanercci, Mr W, Montgomery was unanimously re-elected as chairman of the Board. It was resolved that until the next meeting of the Board the present general committee be requested to act. Mr Webb laid on the table a design for the seal of the Board, prepared by Mr Mountfort, and moved its adoption. The motion not being seconded fell through. Mr Malet gave notice of motion for next meeting, as follows;—“That the general committee do consist of nine members, three to form a quorum.” The meeting then adjourned.
