The charge against Mr Simcock has been withdrawn, the Bank of New Zealand having effected a satisfactory settlement.

Mr George McLean, of Waikouaiti, was sworn a member of the Executive to-day. The Hon D. Pollen announced in theLegislative Council that Mr George McLean had been appointed Commissioner of Customs. Nelson, July 5.
Mr Charles Elliott, immigration officer and original proprietor of the Nelson Examiner, dropped dead this morning, while going to port to proceed on boarc? the Cainperdown. Dunedin, July 4.
In reply to a letter from Mr Bradshaw, complaining of the unsatisfactory manner in which the coroner's duties are carried out in the city, the Minister of Justice has replied, pointing out that an amended Coroners Act has been promised. The subject of the establishing a paid fire brigade is under the consideration of the City Council. Mr Robert Peatti, M.A, haß been appointed Head Master of the Girls' High School, in place of Mr Pope, resigned. The Variety Troupe opened last night. The licenced victuallers are advertising a caution against signing the memorial now in circulation in favor of Mr Stout's Licensing Bill.
