MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, June 29. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Drunk and Disorderly'.— An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was lined 10s. Larceny. —Mary M‘Cauley was charged with stealing a dress, jacket, polonaise, locket, and other trinkets from Mrs Webb, Tuam street. The accused had been staying in the honse for a little while, and left on Sunday last. After she had gone the articles were missed, and when* she was arrested they were found on her. The prosecutor valued them at £2. Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. George Murray arrested for stealing some saveloys from the shop of Mr Dearing, butcher, Colombo street, valued at sixpence; there was a long list of convictions against the accused, and he was sentenced to- one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Horses and Cattle at Large. —For permitting horses and cattle to wander a fine of 5s was inflicted in each of the following cases :—R. A. Green, J. S. Wills, Alexander Cowan, J. Gunty, James Granville, William Merryman, and J, W. White. Absent from Cab. —For being absent from their horse and cab the following cabmen were each fined 10s ; —Charles Stratton, Andrew M‘Taggart, Alexander Beattee, John Brown, and Samuel Lacy. A similarcharge against George Smith was dismissed, as the constable could not identify defendant. Plying for Hire at the Railway.— Alfred Williams, summoned for plying for hire at the railway station without a license or permission from the Superintendent, was fined 10s. A similar charge against William Wyatt was adjourned for a week. Burning Goese, —William Jones, Thos Jackson, and Thomas Smith, were summoned for burning gorse on the Harewood road, without permission from the Road Board. Defendants pleaded ignorance of the law, and said they had since obtained the necessary authority from the Board. Charge dismissed. Unregistered Dog.— Henry Davie, for being the owner of an unregistered dog, was fined 20s. Unlawful Rescue of .Cattle.— John Ballinger, was charged with rescuing two cows from James Gilbert while they were being driven to the pound. Mr Jameson appeared for defendant. The cattle had been feeding on the flat near the river at Heathcote, and the evidence showed that the complainant commenced driving the cattle off a road where they had been hunted by complainant’s dogs. The cows had been merely turned back by defendant’s 'daughter and another girl. In reply to the Bench, complainant said he had taken the cattle off a public road a chain wide, and that he had been authorised by the Board to impound cattle off that road. Defendant kept two cows without having anyiand to run them on. His Worship said' he would dismiss the case, but defendant must not allow his cows to grass-'bn the road in future.' lA Using language. Sarah Hammill was clfarged with using obscene language in Fiigl street on the 16th instant. The offence proved on the evidence of two an( j a fi ne 0 f 2Cs, with 6s expenses, wa/ inflicted. UsiNGy Abusive Language.— William charged with using abusive language towards Joseph Chaney on the IQth of Jjfne. The parties are old neighbours, an< J‘ there has existed an old grudge between th£m. His Worship told defendant he vfould inflict a light fine this time, but if he £ame before him on a similar charge he 'would be compelled to bind him over to keep the peace. Fined 10s and cost of / witness. . r Breach of City Bye-laws. Arthur pjlis summoned for obstructing Cashel street with his horse, was fined 10s, J. S. Willis, charged with being absent from his horse, was fined 10s.
