GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS.

The following is the report of the examiners of candidates for Government scholarships, with tables showing the marks gained in each subject and the total. We also add the schools at which the candidates are being educated: — “Christchurch, June 28rd, 1876. “ The Minister for Education. “ Sir, —vVe have the honor to forward the return of the results of the examination for the Provincial Government Scholarships. Of 82 candidates entered, 72 presented themselves, distributed among the classes as follows:—In Class A, 15 boys and 7 girls; in Class B, 11 boys and 10 girls; in Class C, 16 boys and 5 girls; and in Class D, 6 boys and 2 girls. “ The first two places in Class A are taken by Leonard Chapman and Mary Wells, with Walter Pilliet a good third. In Class B, Margaret Msnzies and Cecilia Boss are first and second. Maud Dobson and Lucy Fawcett have acquitted themselves well, being

only eleven and twelve marks respectively below the second place. In Class C, Joseph Grossmann and Katherine Alexander are first and second, Louis Cohen taking third place with a difference of only two marks, In Class D, the marking generally is very low. Four of the candidates, however, have succeeded in making more than half marks, and of these R. Green stands first and Edith Dunnage second, We recommend that the two scholarships, the allocation of which among the classes has been left to be decided by the result of the examination, be given to the third candidates in Classes A and 0, namely, to Walter Pilliet and Louis Cohen, “ We subjoin a table showing in detail the number of marks obtained by each candidate, which will supply full information as to the work done by each in the various subjects. “ We have the honor to be, Sir, “ Your obedient servants, “J. V. Colbornb-Yekl, M.A. “ Wm. Jas. Habens, 8.A,"
