ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTE, This Board met on Thursday, the 22nd. Present—Messrs Clephaue, Langdown, Manning, Kerr, and Attwood, After the piinutes were read, Mr Clephane, as returning officer, apprised the members that Mr William Attwood had been elected a member of the Board in the place of Mr J. T. Fisher, resigned, when it was proposed and carried that Mr Samuel Manning be chairman for the ensuing year. The clerk reported having received deposit £2 ; subscriptions by Mr Leigh for forming continuation of Opawa road, £l4 ; do from Messrs Austin and Kirk for repairs to Tait’s Quarry road, £l4 ; from Mr Garland, subscription to Ooawa road, £1 10s ; special rate, £l6 14s ; Waimakariri rate, £l4 8s fid ; ordinary rate, £lßl 17s 8d; total, £240 10s 2d. Correspondence from Mr C. Cuff, complaining of six chains of very dangerous road, Lower Avonvillo. Agreed that 100 yards of shingle be placed on same. Prom Mr William Ness, asking for shingle on footpath. To be attended to. From Mr W. R. Brown, long letter re rates. Referred to the assessor. From Mr E, W. Roper, re Ballestio’s creek, Sumner. Two of the members agreed to visit same and report. Prom Mr W. Smart and fifteen others, complaining of a nuisance. To be attended to. From Mrs M. A. Buie, re rates. Referred to the clerk. A petition from Mr W. H. Lane and forty-seven other residents and visitors, praying the Board to widen the Sumner road close to the cutting on the Christchurch side, as the same was very dangerous for traffic, especially on Sundays and holidays. To Be acknowledged, and informed the Board is not in a position to incur greater outlay out of the ordinary rates of the district than what was necessary to keep the road in repair, as it considered any great improvements made on that road would benefit the Christchurch and otber public more than the ratepayers of the Heathcote district, but that the petition would have the Board’s support if forwarded to the General Government. Prom the Drainage Board, requesting this Board to collect by their clerk the drainage rate, and if so on what terms. Also that iu reference to the fox at the outfall drain and Stanmore road, the matter had been referred to their engineer to take what necessary steps he deemed expedient. Complaints having been made that soil was being removed, and the roads and footpaths in the district being otherwise damaged, it was resolved that the clerk should advertise, and if necessary take proceedings under clause 74 of the Ordinance. The Board decided not to undertake the collecting of the drainage rate for this year, but that in future arrangements might be made for collec ing all the rates in the district jointly. From Me Neighbours, re bad state of road from Rocky point to Opawa school, offering subscription of £7 10s towards repairing the same. Agreed to. Prom Mr J. Wallace, re bad state of Bnsor’s road. The foreman to inspect and attend to same. From Mr J. Whitelaw, re rates, and complaining of bad state of Going’s road. To be attended to Prom Mr G. L. Lee, reminding the Board of the dangerous proximity of the river Avon to the read, which is very narrow, and suggesting the river have a wire 'fence along it to prevent further accidents. To be informed the matter is under consideration- A lot of other business, in reference to improvements required in the district, was considered, and after some time it was resolved —“ That tenders be called for making an approach to the New Brighton Bridge, for shingling Ollivier’s, Going’s, Avon River, and Waltham roads, and for 150 yards of broken metal for the bridle path.” Tenders were then opened for assessing the district, for shingling Colombo, Wilson, Opawa, and Cemetery roads. Accounts, to the amount of £2Ol 4s lid, were passed for payment, when the Board adjourned.
