BURSTING OF A RESERVOIR.

Worcester, Massachusetts, is supplied with water from Lynde Brook reservoir, located five miles north, covering 150 acres, and holding 700,000,000 gallons. The recent heavy rains caused the reservoir to spring a leak a few days ago, fears being immediately caused that it would burst. While all the hydrants and other outlets in Worcester were turned on to draw off the water, desultory efforts w'ere also made to drain the reservoir by opening a side passage. In a short time, however, the dam gave way, the water rushing out in a dense mass twenty feet high and thirty feet wide, The valley below was soon overflowed, all the buildings, trees, dams, or other structures being swept away. Timely warning enabled people to save themselves and also their moveable property, so only one life was lost. The damage is estimated to amount to several million dollars. Eight hundred feet of the Boston and Albany Railroad was destroyed, but this railway embankment diverted the flood, so but trifling damage was done in the suburbs of Worcester.
