The Fiji Bank has confirmed the windingup resolution in the following terms, agreed to by the Bank of New Zealand—- “ That the Bank of New Zealand should give up all claim to 7000 acres of land in Fairoini belonging to the company, and that the Fiji Bank shareholders should either take New Zealand Bank shares, with interest from the Ist March, or cash at £l7 per share. The largest meeting ever held at (? Newcastle) took place last night. It was called to pass a resolution requesting the Government to proceed at once with the abolition question. This was lost by a considerable majority, and an amendment passed—" That this meeting approves of the action of the Opposition in deferring the question of abolition until more important matter is dealt with.” The amendment was carried with acclamation. Another meeting was then called by Mr Bryon to take into consideration the present position of affairs at Wellington, when he proposed the following resolution —“That this meeting, although disapproving of the informalities connected with the sale, think that the action of the Government in disposing of the Piako Swamp on the terras obtained was wise, being aware that improvements effected there have been of great benefit to the district.” An amendment of a vote of censure on the Government in the Piako Swamp transaction followed, and was carried by an overwhelming majority, after which a resolution to effect was proposed—" That, whilst censuring the Government for their illegal transaction, this meeting is of opinion that the purchasers should not suffer thereby, but that a good title to the land should be issued forthwith.” Meetings held at Alexandra and Hamilton townships supported the Government, An old woman, an habitual drunkard, has been found dead in the police cells where she was lodged. A petition to Parliament is being got up praying that the House will complete the Piako Swamp sale, and setting forth that the land would be perfectly useless without the expenditure of a very large amount of capital, and that great and unraixed good has been done to the different districts there by the large and well directed expenditure of the Piako Swamp Company.
