MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, June 19. [Before G. L. Lee, and W. H. Pilliet, Esqs., J.P’s.] • Drunk and Indecent Conduct. Frederick Bench, charged with being drunk, committing an act of exposure, and damaging the arresting constable’s clothes, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor, and ordered to pay 7s 6d damages done. Drunk and Committing a Breach of the Peace. John Kidd, arrested for drunkennsss and striking a man in Gloucester street on Saturday night, was fined 20s. Drunk and Disorderly.— Win Davey, for being drunk and creating a c sturbance in High street, was fined 5s ; Samuel Dobbinson, for drunkenness, was fined 10s ; and another inebriate, being first offence, ss. James Gould, charged with being drunk and using obscene language in High street, was fined 10s. Assault. —E. H. Shirley was charged on summons with assaulting his wife, Anne Shirley, on the 16th June. Plaintiff stated that on that night her husband struck and kicked her. He gave her a black eye and then turned her out of doors. Defendant admitted that he had struck his wife, but she had provoked him by not cooking his meals and neglecting her home. Fined 20s and cautioned not to repeat the offence. Larceny.— John Henry Falloon, a young lad, was charged with stealing a pocket knife from Mr Pope’s store, Colombo road south. When arrested, the accused admitted having taken the knife off Mr Pope’s shop counter on Friday evening. He went into the store on that night and asked the price of a box of paints. After he had gone the knife, valued one shilling, was missed. The mother of the lad said he had only just recovered from typhus fever, and she did not think he always quite knew what he was doing. Inspector Feast said the boy’s father did not always set him the best example. The Bench told the lad that, under all the circumstances, he would bo dealt leniently with this time, but he miist be careful not to appear in Court again. Ordered to be detained in custody for four hours.
