Sydney, June 18. Victoria has promised co-operation with reference to a second cable.
A rich quartz reef has been discovered in the Gulgong district. A Brisbane telegram states that on Sunday last a party of lumberers found a man in a deplorable condition in Wide Bay, He is one of the five men who recently escaped from New Caledonia. One was drowned during the passage. Black trackers are looking after the other three, who left the rescued man to look for assistance, he being much injured. The Postmaster General said with reference to the proposal of America to increase the rate for the conveyance of the Australian mails across the continent, that from information received unofficially he hoped no increase would be demanded. Melbourne, June 15.

Regarding the case of Mr Simcock, late manager of the Land Mortgage Bank, it has transpired in evidence that he drew £7OOO out of the Bank of New Zealand for his own purposes, giving a [cheque?], which was dishonored. Mr Simcock, getting embarrassed, forged a bill of exchange. The case has been dismissed on a technical objection, but a fresh information is to be laid. Messrs Stevenson’s case has been dismissed with costs.
The sheep epidemic is causing anxiety. There have been heavy gales at Hobart Town and Launceston.

A meeting of all the Past-Provincial Grand Masters of Independent Orders of Oddfellows was convened by the Grand Master last evening, for thn purpose of forming a committee to make amendments and offer suggestions re the Friendly Societies Bill. It was resolved —“That other friendly societies in town be requested to co-operate with them, and form one committee, with power to add to their number. They arc to receive all delagates from various lodges and districts in the colony of aT the societies, and to receive all suggestions from the same, so as to emb dy them with their own, and forward the whole to the Colonial Secretary. Circulars will be distributed amongst all the societies.”

A meeting of the Dunstan District Political League was held at the Clyde yesterday, when the following resolution was put and carried: League having watched with interest the correspoml*-nce that has taken place between Sir Julius Vogel, the Premier of New Zealand, and his Honor the Superintendent of Otago; believes no good will accrue to the people of Otago thiough abolition, dnd that a copy of the foregoing resolution be forwarded to our representative, Vincent Pyke, Bsq.” Invercargill, June 15.
There are great complaints here about the inconvenience caused by three members of the Southland Waste Lands Board being absent as members of Parliament. At the weekly meeting to*day only one member beside the chief commissioner was present, and no business could be transacted,
