The mail from the West Coast of Africa recently brought intelligence to England that on the evening of the Ist of February, whilst the steamer Ethiopia was lying at anchor off Little Popo, a fire broke out which totally destroyed one-half of the beach town, the sea breeze blowing at the time adding considerably to the spreading of the flames. A great trader called Aita Ajavo had 2000 kegs of gunpowder; this exploded, and gave a shock Jlike that of an earthquake. About fifty were killed, and others were in a dying state when the steamer left, It was stated that two factories alone had lost about £40,000. The Vienna correspondent of the Eastern Budget says, writing on the 26th February ; “ There are few countries on the Continent where the press enjoys so much liberty as in Austria. One of the things that most strikes a stranger on his arrival at Vienna is the great number of comic papers, and the freedom with which they attack all sorts of public men and institutions ; yet press trials scarcely ever occur, and Government ‘ warnings 1 are never heard of. But there is one thing that the Austrians wi’l not permit, and that is an attack on their country by a foreigner residing among them. Three foreign correspondents have been recently expelled from Vienna for this abuie of hospitality, with the unanimous approval of the Vienna press ; and the Oartenlaube, of Leipzig, has been refused access to the Austrian dominions for a similar reason, a scurrilous article having appeared in that paper on the Empress Maria Theresa, which has excited universal indignation among the Austrian public.”
