NEWS OF THE DAY.
Bankrupt Stock. —When the public are made aware of the fact that Messrs G. L. Beath and Co only paid about 10s 6d in the £ for the drapery, and 13s 6d in the £ for the clothing, the mystery is cleared as to how they sell Messrs J. and J. Crothers’ Bankrupt Stock so marvellously cheap. The Shilling Table, now reduced to Sixpence, still remains a mystery—a beautifully carved satinwood fan for sixpence, or an eighteenpenny box of scented soap for sixpence! cannot be picked up every day. We would therefore recommend all to pay a visit while this sale lasts, Lydia Howard® Burlesque Company. —As will be seen by advertisement elsewhere this company, which has gained golden opinions elsewhere, make their first appearance to-morrow evening at the Music Hall, which, with its new proscenium decorations, &c., has been made into a perfect bijou theatre. Miss Lydia Howards is the leading lady of the company, and she is supported by Mdlle Solange Navaro, Miss Jennie Nye, &c. The gentlemen comprise Messrs R. W. Carey, H. Power, H. Towle (a very clever musician and pianist), and others. The opening performance will be Herves extravaganza of “ Chilperic,” and from the manner in which they have been spoken of, both for the correct and handsome dresses and bright artistic acting and singing, they may look forward to a long and successful season here.
Ilma De Mursica. —The final appearance of this gifted lady and her talented assistants in Christchurch, will take place at the Oddfellows’ Hall this evening. For this a really excellent programmebasbeeu prepared, comprising several of the gems of Mdlle De Murska’s repertoire. The items set down for her are “ Lo I here the gentle lark,” with flute obligato by Signor Giammona; the celebrated “ Shadow song” from 11 Dinorah and the grand finale aria from II Trovatore,” with the “ Miserere.” Signori Susini, Hosnati, and Giammoni have several choice pieces and Mr John Hill will once more delight the audience with his artistic pianoforte playing. As this will be positively Mdlle De Murska’s last appearance, she leaving per Albion for Nelson on Thursday, we expect to see a crowded house. The Domain. —The improvements in the domain are progressing rapidly, adding to the attractive appearance of the gardens. The river walk from the bridge downwards is being widened from seven to twenty-two feet, and this increased width will be found a great convenience to visitors, who seem to have made this their favorite walk. The surplus soil has been used to raise and widen the river border, to surface the walks where hollowed by the strong winds, and also to top dress the lawns. The border along the river walk is to be trenched two feet deep and planted with dwarf ornamental conifers, roses, herbaceous, and bedding out plants. The first section below the bridge is being trenched up and levelled for the purpose of planting magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas, and liliums.|A semi-circular walk is in course of formation around the northern side of the second section, while the latter is being planted with ferns, cabbage trees, and other ornamental plants. The intention, contemplated for years, of converting the first half of the domain into a flower garden, and reserving the lower portion for an arboretum, is now neatly accomplished, and when completed will tend 'to increase the general attractiveness of this favorite public report.
Tai Tapu Races.— The following are the weights for the Tai Tapu Handicap:—Tadraor, 9st 71b; Phantom, 9st; Eclipse, Bst 8lb; Tai Tapu, Bst Blb. According to the C. J.C. rules Mr Shadbolt’s entry, Ladybird, could not be received. —Wm, C. Webb, Jas. Stevenson, handicappers. Maori Skeleton.— A. few days ago the men engaged in widening the river walk on the south side of the Domain gardens unearthed a Maori skeleton. The body had been buried in a sitting position and facing the river, the skull being only about a foot below the surface. A portion of the skull, and the leg and arm bones are perfect, but the vertebrm, ribs, hands, feet, and other small bones have decayed away. Girls’ High School. —At the meeting of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College, held yesterday afternoon, it was resolved to adopt the recommendation of the College committee as to its site. That body recommended that the building be erected on the quarter-acre fronting Hereford and Antigua streets, formerly occupied by the Female Refuge. The Board also determined that it was desirable that the building should conform in style and material to that about to be erected for the other departments of the College.
The Bluff Railway Material.— The Southland Times says:—“The whole of what was the rolling stock of the old Bluff railway at the time when the line was constructed on the broad guage principle, has now been shipped to Sydney. With the usual blundering, or something worse, which characterises the Otago Provincial Government, there has been no stipulation as to the price to be paid for the material on its arrival in Sydney ; in fact Macandrew and Co have been selling a pig in a poke. Practically the purchasers will have this material at their own price, for it is not likely to be re-shipped. We should like to know whether these gentlemen who have sold public property in the way mentioned, carry on their private business in the same manner. If they did, undoubtedly they would soon have to go into the Insolvent Court. We are further informed that the contract for freight of this railway plant was drawn in the most slovenly manner, and as a matter of fact, the coat of shipping it away will be very much more than was contemplated.”
