HEATHUOTB. This Board met at 10.80 a.m. on Thursday, June Bth. Present —All the members, Mr Robert Clephane in the chair. The clerk reported having received ordinary rates, £57 19s ; Waimakariri, £6 17s Gd ; special, £25 8s; General Government Grant (balance), £lO lls Id ; deposit, £2 ; total, £lO2 8s 7d, The clerk was ordered to write to Mr Bell about cutting holes in the road at Sumner ; and to the Drainage Board, asking them to clear out Bell’s creek, Sumner. Correspondence was read—From Dr Townend, reporting he was attending one case of typhoid fever, and one of scarlet fever, in the District. From Mr A. Oppenheim, stating he was unable to give information concerning the dedication of roads near the South Town belt; and, also, complaining of stray cattle destroying the footpaths. The clerk stated he had seen him since, when he said he would supply the information required. From Mr Robert Martindale, complaining of the bad state of the road from the Swing bridge over the bridle path, which was almost impassible, The foreman was asked to report on the matter. From the town clerk, stating that the cost of the forming and shingling the East side of the East town belt, between the old Stanmore road and Hereford street east, would be £6 per chain, and that the work will be commenced as soon as the half cost, £27, of doing the nine chains was paid. It was resolved that a cheque should be passed in payment, subject to the foreman’s approving of the specifications for contract. From the Drainage Board, replying to the letter and petition about re-opening the Ferry road drain, stating that they would take the earliest opportunity of forwarding a definite reply as soon as the consulting engineer had supplied his plans for the drainage of the district. They thought, however, the time would certainly not exceed eighteen months before the drain is either covered in or filled up. From the Avon Road Board, re forming approaches to the New Brighton b'idge, with account of expenditure and receipts of erecting the bridge, and stating that, as all the money, viz, £550, had been spent, and the approaches not yet made, tie Avon Road Board had decided that each Board should make its own approach to the new bridge. A reply was decided on to the effect that this Board is of opinion that the balance of funds left after the construction of the bridge ought to • have gone further towards the forming of the approiches than merely erecting the wings, and tarring and painting, and that as there is still an expensive earthwork approach to form on the Heathcote side with no funds to do it with, this Board requests the Avon Road Board to form both approaches conjointly, as the benefits to be derived from the bridge are mutual.— From the Secretary of Public Works, re Provincial Road Board grant, stating that the sum of £ISOO had been allocated to the Board for general purposes, for the six months ending September 30th, and that one-half would be payable on June BOth. From Mr R. J. Loughnan, complaining of the bad state of the culvert between bis section and the Ferry road. It was ordered to be attended to, and decided that he should be requested to cut trees on the site of the road. Some minor matters, chiefly relative to repairs of roads and drains was also considered, It was decided to decline the Christchurch City Council’s request to join in purchasing a steam roller. After some of the ordinary routine business had been transacted, it was resolved to shingle the footpaths in the following streets and roads:— Avonville, Gloucester, Haast, Hanmer, Armagh, Worcester, Hereford, and Cashel streets east, Gasworks and Waltham roads, and the Ferry road from the steam wharf to the quay, lb was resolved—“ That tenders be called for assessing the district for shingling Wilson’s, Cemetery, Opawa, and Colombo roads.” The clerk read an estimate of receipts and expenditure for the next six months, showing, after deducting all ordinary expenses, a balance of £I3OO for extra contracts and works not yet entered into. The gross receipts were estimated to be £3571 2s 10d, and the expenditure £2198 13s 9d. Tenders for forming a new road from Wilson’s road to the Gasworks road were opened, and one accepted.
