MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, June 12. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, E.M.) Drunkenness. Four inebriates were fined 10s each, and one sa, all being first offences. Illegally on Premises. George Thompson, charged with being illegally on the premises of Mr W. Cooper, Durham street, was discharged with a caution.
Drunk and Assaulting the Police.— A charge against Michael Dugan, who had been arrested for being drunk and assaulting the police, was adjourned for a week, as the accused was suffering -from injuries received at the time of his arrest. Breach of the City Byelaws.— Austin Nalder, summoned for lighting a fire in the open air, was fined 10s. W. Jenkins, charged with letting off fireworks on the Lincoln road, was dismissed with a caution. Joseph Andrews was summoned for burning gorss in Latimer square without giving the the required notice to his neighbours. It was shown that defendant had given notice of his intention to the City Council and Fire Brigade. Fined 10s. Wm. Price,summoned for placing rubbish in Lichfield street, was fined 10s. A charge against John Collier, for obstructing Tuara street, was dismissed. For driving two vehicles —William Hill was fined 10s; Joseph Wood was fined 10s for causing an obstruction in Durham street, and Joshua Gorkin 10s for obstructing Cambridge terrace.
Horses and Cattle at Large. —For permitting horses and cattle to, wander the following persons were each fined 5s Andrew McTaggart, T, Aldridge, R.Tregauco, W. Stoddart, K. McKnight, H. Wright, J, Chambers, S. Wood, J. Craddock, Henry Scrimshaw, 0. Kiver, sen, C. Cleinston, W. Vincent, H, Falloon, J. Stark, R. Beufield, F. H. Brittan, J. Howell, F. Halgood, J, Brightmore, F, Wheeler, S, Taylor, R. David son. A. Haider, summoned on two informations, was fined Os; J; Highway, 15s; T. Wheeler, 10s; H, Knight, 10s ; and W, Neighbour, 10s. Fighting in the Street. Henry Russell, charged with fighting in High street, was fined 10s, and 5s expense cf witness.
Furious Riding. —David McLean, charged with riding furiously in High street, was fined 20s. Archibald McKindray, for a similar offence on the Riccarton road, committed on the night of the 20th ulto, was fined 10s and 10s expenses of witnesses. Driving on Wrong Side. —Thomas Codling, charged with driving on the wrong side of Colombo street on the 27th ult, and thereby coming into collision with a cab, was fined 10s, James Cook, ’busdriver, was summoned for driving on his wrong side in
Cathedral Square on 9th May. Mr J. Gresson appeared for defendant. The evidence showed that he (defendant) was not to blame for having swerved, and the charge was dismissed.
Driving without a License —Robert Falloon and Thos, Davenport, charged with above offence, were each fined 10s. Absent from Horse and Cart.— John White for this ofEemce was fined 10s; Charles Turner, 10a; John Cassin, 10s; Andrew Smith, 10s; Charles Greece, 10a; Danl. Howard, 10s; Henry Dodd, 10s, Throwing Stones. —Alfred Piper, Richd, Savage, Alfred Hooper, and David O’Neil, four lads, were charged with throwing stones on the roof of the Waltham Wesleyan Church on the night of the 2tth May. .The evidence showed that the annoyance was caused during the time a public meeting was being held in the church, and that defendants, Piper and Savage, were among the crowd of boys from whom the stones were seen to come. This stone-throwing nuisance had been continued for the last two years, to the annoyance of the persons attending the church. The charge against Hooper and O’Neil was dismissed, and Piper and Savage were each fined 103, his Worship remarking that they also deserved a whipping for their conduct.
Breach op Firearms Act.— Henry Cox, was charged with carrying a gun through Hagley Park on 13th May. Defendant said he was carrying the fowling piece to the gunmakers to be repaired, and was not aware that he was committing an offence by walking through the park. Case dismissed. Unregistered Dogs. —Frederick Yesey, summoned for being the owner of two dogs unregistered for the current year, was fined 40s. G. W. Ell, for a similar offence, was also fined 40s.
Using Obscene Language. Henry O’Neil and Alice O'Neil were charged with using obscene language in the hearing of persons passing along a public thoroughfare. The female did not appear when called, and his Worship ordered that a warrant be issued for her apprehension, the other defendant was fined 10s.
Breach of Public House Ordinance —J. W. Morton was summoned for keeping his licensed house open during prohibited hours on the night of 26th May. Defendant admitted the offence, and said that on that evening the Hunt Club had dinner at his hotel. He had endeavoured to clear his house at eleven o’clock and again at halfpast, and it was while he was clearing the house that the sergeant came in. The waiters left the room at eleven o’clock and no wines had been served after that hour. He had omitted to apply for an extension that night. Fined £5.
Unlicensed Drivers. John Falloon and Samuel Lacy charged with driving from the Railway without a license, were each fined 10s,
Trespassing in Pursuit of Game.--A charge against Isaac Hodges for trespassing with dog and gun on B, Mitchell’s property at the Sandhills in pursuit of game on the 21th May was adjourned for a week. A charge of trespass against J, S, Wagner was dismissed, as the complainant did not put in an appearance. Assault and Illegal Rescue.—Two charges of assault and one of illegal rescue of cattle against Henry Cavenagh were adjourned until the 22nd instant.
LYTTELTON. Monday, June 12. [Before W. Donald, Esq., 11.M.] Drunkenness. —Peter Enlund, an old offender, arrested by Constable Devins, for this offence was fined 10s. Public House Ordinance. Patrick Barry was charged with a breach of the above ordinance. The case was adjourned until 10 a.m to-morrow (Tuesday.)
