LICENSING COURT, LYTTELTON.

Tuesday, Juke 6.

[Before W. Donald, H. R. Webb, and J. T. Rouse, Esqs, Licensing Commissioners. J John 8. Cameron made an an plication for an hotel license for the Mitre Hotel, Norwich Quay; granted. Thomas Smith applied for a license for the Ocean View Hotel, Governor’s Bay. Mr H. N. N alder opposed the application on behalf of Mr Beechy. The license was refused. Patrick Cain applied for a wine and beer license for the Harp of Brin, London street. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared in support of the application. A petition against the license being granted, signed by fifty six householders, was lodged. Mr Austin, of London afreet, said he and his family were much disturbed by drunken men from this house, particularly on Sunday, 21st May, when he had to apply to the police officer in charge. Cross-examined by Mr H, N. Nalder—Mr Austin acknowledged that many cf the signatures were in one handwriting, and had been procured at the Good Templars Lodge. He never spoke to Mr Cain on the subject of the drinking going on, or reported to the police formally, though he had mentioned the subject frequently to the police in an informal manner. A counter petition, speaking strongly in .favor of Mr Cain’s license being renewed, was presented by Mr Naldcr, It was signed by most of Mr Cain’s neighbors in Oxford street, and by some of the most influential residents in the town. Mr Cain denied the statements made by Mr Austin in reference to the disturbance at his house on the 21st of May. The Bench refused to grant a renewal of the license, remarking that at the time it was originally granted they had stated that these wiue and beer licenses were merely granted to enable lodgers to get their beer at dinner time. Stephen Baily applied for a renewal of the license for the Albion Hotel; adjourned for a week to allow of an application for the transfer of the license.

Patrick Barry applied for a renewal of the wine and beer license for the Boyal Oak; the case was adjourned for a week, an information having been laid against the licensee. Mr Beechy’s application for an hotel license for the White Cliffs Hotel, Governor’s Bay, was granted. Mary Ann Beverley’s application for an hotel license for the baxon Hotel was granted.

Hobart Coles’ license for the Lyttelton Hotel was granted.

Wm. H. Kiddey’s license for the Empire Hotel was granted. Wm. Hardeckc’s wine and beer license was granted with a caution. Edward Lucas was granted renewal of his license for the Canterbury Hotel. Mary Moynahan’s application for a re* newal of license for the Crown Hotel was granted. John McQuilkin applied for renewal of license for liailway Hotel ; granted. Henry Newton’s application for renewal of license for the Wheat Sheaf Hotel, Head of the Bay, was granted, T. A, W. Parsons was granted a renewal of his hotel license for the Royal Hotel.

John Pierce’s license for the British Hotel wag granted. Walter Shave’s application for renewal of license for his hotel at Governor’s Bay was granted.

George M. Warne’s application for an hotel license was adjourned for a week, the police complaining that the house was in bad repair.
