The Assembly has voted a sum of money for a second battery of permanent artillery. Messrs Noyes and Reid, grain factors, Melbourne, have called a meeting of their creditors. It is stated that the loss sustained by squatters in the three colonies during the past quarter amounts to ten millions sterling. Arrived—Otago. The Native Minister has returned from the Waikato to-day. Typhoid fever has been very prevalent for the past few months. Auckland, June 2. A public meeting last night passed resolutions condemning the delay in the construction of the Kaipara railway. The Southern Cross contradicts the rumour that the Ministry intend to propose another six million loan. Wellington, June 1. A meeting of the medical men was held last night and a medical society formed, and the necessary officers appointed. The Hawea arrived from Lyttelton at 12 30. When coming alongside the wharf she ran into the stern of the hulk Eli Whitney, doing some damage to the hulk, but not hurting the steamer in the slightest Wellington, June 2. The adjourned meeting of the Titanic 'tteel and Iron Company was held last night. r Jhe shareholders from the other provinces were not represented, but several resolutions from Dunedin and Taranaki were read and
discussed. The chairman pointed out with reference to the supposed allotment of five hundred shares to Smith ; that there would be no such allocation unless the patent showed they could work the sand profitably, and he was certain that although the patent might be successful practically, it could not possibly be so financially, and there need be no apprehension of any claim being made upon the company respecting those five hundred sthares. The result of the meeting was that the directors were empowered to put the company's furnace in blast with as little delcy as possible. The Harbour Board resolved at to-day's meeting to deepen the outer and inner bars at the heads by means of heavy harrows drawn by a steamer. This plan was tried some years ago and proved successful. A meeting of the Steeplechase Club was held last night, when it was resolved to hold a steeplechase meeting at Aramoha, on Friday the 23rd, The programme includes the Aramoha Annual Steeplechase, of 100 eovs ; second horse, 20 sovs ; about three miles. Maiden, of 30 sovs, with sweep of 2 aovs. Entrances close on Friday 18th, at 8 p.m. A large pigeon sweep will take place on the following day.
