MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

LYTTBLTON. Friday, June 2. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.] Absent feom Ship without leave.— Duncan Campbell was charged by Captain Tannock, of the Pomona, with this offence, and sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment with hard labour. Larceny.—John Lee was charged with stealing a pair of trousers from Henry Watson Constable Moutray stated that from information received he arrested the prisoner for the above offence. He found him looking over the prosecutor's swag. Prisoner said he had borrowed the trousers, and had not stolen them, Henry Watson, a sailor, stated that he knew the prisoner in Port Chalmers some short time since. He met him on tbe wratf on Tuesday, when be asked him to lend bim a shirt. He went to the Royal Hotel and lent him a shirt. He left his swag at the bar of the hotel, and on coming back found that a pair of trousers had been taken. He then saw the trousers on the prisoner, and gave him in charge for stealing them. He did not give him permission to take the trousers. By the prisoner—He never raid that he had two pai a of trousers, and would lend him a pair as ho had torn his. Charles Edwards sworn, Stated that he saw the prisoner go to the ■wag and take the trousers. He said what belongs to my mate belongs to me; we are chums together. He (witness; then told prisoner that he was doing wrong. Prisoner then went away with the trousers. He said he only borrowed the trousers, and was going to put them back, when the constable came in and arrested him. The Bench cautioned the prisoner very strongly on his conduct, and dismissed the case.
